THE BONE COLLECTOR

1999

Although this isn't a great film, it's certainly one of the most suspenseful, gruesome, and scary ones of this, or any year. In the future, it will probably always be linked with "The Silence of the Lambs," and "Seven" as part of Hollywood's trilogy of classic horror films.Once again, we're dealing with a psychotic serial killer, who stalks, tortures, and kills his victims according to a very specific pattern...which I won't reveal here. Denzel Washington, in the unusual role of a quadriplegic detective does a fine job, as does Queen Latifah, as his nurse. But, the film belongs to Angelina Jolie, as a beautiful young police officer(and former model), who is instructed at the crime scenes, by the bedridden Washington. Jolie(the daughter of Jon Voight) is intelligent, beautiful, and an excellent actress. It's just a matter of time before she starts racking up those Oscars. Don't look for believability in the film. Just go with it, and you'll be properly horrified and entertained.

Well, now I know why Jodie Foster turned this one down to do the King & I remake. Let's break it down: we have a child model turned NYC cop trying to transfer to a cushy desk job (Angelina Jolie), an amazing forensics agent who was hurt during the line of duty and is now a quadriplegic with a death wish (Denzel Washington) and a murderer who was sodomized multiple time daily in prison for years prior to beginning his killing spree (I won't give away who, but it sounds pleasant doesn't it?). Put it all together and you get one very mediocre movie with an overly elaborate (and gruesome) plot which is just dumb. Denzel did everything he could, but Jolie was a little weak and there was no chemistry between them. Don't believe the hype on this one- its a rental.
