How to Get a Library Card

Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in the city of Camden, New Jersey is eligible for a library card with the Camden Free Public Library. Anyone not meeting these criteria can join the library by paying an annual fee of $25.

All card applicants will be sent an address verification card in the mail. Upon returning this card to the library, with ID, the patron will be issued a library card. The card is valid for three years for residents or one year if you pay for a membership.

Books may be checked out for two weeks at a time and can be renewed either in person or by telephone. If renewed by phone, you must call and renew before the due date. The late charge is 10¢ per day per book for adults, and 5¢ per day per book for children.

There is no limit on the number of fiction or non-fiction books that may be borrowed, but no more than two books may be borrowed on any one topic.

Videos and DVDs can be rented for $2 for a three day period.

A list of our new books, audiobooks, videos and DVDs is available on our website.

If you have further questions, please call the main library.

Computer Use Policy

Signing up for a Computer

  • You must sign in before you use the computers. After you have signed in, staff will assign you a computer. When your name is called to use a computer, if you are not in the department, your name will be skipped and the next person on the list will get their turn. You will have to sign in again at the bottom of the list.
  • Each session on the computer is one hour. You can sign up for a total of 2 sessions per day. When your time is up, you must get up so the next patron can use the computer. If no one is waiting, you may sign up for a second one-hour session.
  • Anyone in the 7th grade or above can use the computers in the Reference Area.
  • The computers in the Children's Department are reserved for the children in the 6th grade and under.
  • Children in the 6th grade can use the computers in the Reference Area if a parent or a legal guardian accompanies them.

Computer Use

  • Use of library computers to access websites that are obscene or harmful to minors is prohibited. If you view inappropriate websites, your session will be terminated and you will be barred from using the computers again for the day. If you violate this policy again, you will be permanently barred from use of the library computers.
  • Users may not use any library workstation for any illegal or criminal purposes.
Asking For Help
  • You are welcome to ask library staff for assistance getting started searching for information online or for help locating particular websites.
  • If your computer freezes, ask for assistance. If you restart the computer yourself, it may not connect to the printer and this will cause problems for other patrons.
Saving
  • You must save any documents or downloaded files on a disk, not on the computer. The library sells disks for $1 each.
  • The library is not responsible for files left saved on the library computers. Any files saved onto the computer are accessible to everybody else who uses the computer after you. At the end of each day, files saved on library computers will be deleted.
  • DO NOT install any type of software on the library computers. CD-ROMs which require installation of software for a program to run cannot be used on library computers.
Printing
  • As a precaution, we suggest you save your documents to a floppy disk before you print. Better to be safe than sorry.
  • Printing costs 10¢ per page. You can pick up and pay for printed documents at the Reference Desk. Before you print, make sure you know what you are printing. Use the Print Preview feature to verify the number of pages before you click print. If you are unsure of how many pages you are sending to the printer, ask staff for help before you print.
  • If you send something to a printer and nothing happens or you get an error message, do not click the print button more than once. Please ask a staff member for assistance.

IF YOU VIOLATE ANY OF THESE RULES,
YOU WILL RISK LOSING YOUR PRIVILEGE TO USE THE LIBRARY COMPUTERS.

THE LIBRARY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO TERMINATE A COMPUTER SESSION AT ANY GIVEN TIME.
