Vanessa A. Carver
I am mother, wife, child of God and writer all rolled up in one. I've been writing since I was 11. My aunt told me that I used to pretend to read her college textbooks upside down when I was about three or four. I believe that is when my love affair with books began. Writing came later. I recall creating ads for a magazine that I was producing, and I kept many diaries and journals throughout adolescence. Writing kept me sane in those days, though reading was my escape. The more I read, the more I wanted and needed to write. Many adults in my life encouraged poetry, so my poetry and writing blossomed in middle school.

I am happily married to a man who is constantly seeking the truth and building edifices - tangible and intangible. In other words, he is an architect. I have been married for 12 years and have six beautiful children, four girls and two boys. They bring me back to myself, keeping me grounded and weighting my wings when I want to fly away.  Each one of them bears a special gift from God for me. It is a relationship and not religion that defines "child of God" to me.  If  I was not connected to Him, my gift to write would consume me.  He brings balance and purpose to my writing.

Today, I can confidently say I am a disciplined writer and on the way to being published.  I feel that I have already succeeded at writing, though there are more goals on the horizon. I am at peace and not restless.
APPROACH TO WORK/WORKS IN PROGRESS:
I am working on
"Sack Cloth and Ashes - Havana de mi alma," an epic poem and collection of essays about my trip to Havana, Cuba in 1993 and an untitled collection of poems about the Holocaust and the Jewish experience. I have studied the Holocaust since I was 14 and have built an extensive library on the subject. In the last couple years, I have discovered the Black presence in the Holocaust, which I will continue incorporating in my writing. I am in love with language, especially the Spanish dialect ladino, which I can read, write and speak modestly. I am also familiar with Yiddish, a German dialect, Portuguese, Polish and Hebrew, which I am teaching myself to read and write.
