| History The Steelers are one of the CFFL's original 5 franchises, and the only one with the Tigers and Predators, to last the entire length of the Old Skool era. The Steelers had the first pick in the inaugural CFFL Draft, and used it on QB Don Majkowski. They finished 3rd out of 5 teams in 1990, 67 points behind the champion Blue Devils. They had their most successful season in 1991, finishing second in the points standings, 105 points behind the repeat champion Blue Devils. They finished second in their division to the Blue Devils at 8-5-1, but went on to win the head-to-head championship, beating the Dolphins 35-21. After the season, the team changed their name to the Redskins, but changed it back before the 1992 season began. The Steelers fell back to 3rd place in the points standings in 1992, 283 points behind the champion Tigers. They also finished 7-7, third place in their division. 1993 saw organizational changes as Steelers owner Chris Karpuk took over ownership of the Wildcats from Nick Nahirniak and renamed the team the Bears. He also entered into a loose alliance with Pat Kiedaisch, owner of the expansion Broncos. These changes didn't help much. While the team finished in 4th place in the points standings, 268 points behind the champion Predators, they also finished in last place in the CFFL North with a 5-9 record. However, they did win their second head-to-head championship in 3 years, defeating the Gators 25-16 in the championship game. After the season, the Bears merged operations with the Steelers. The merger did nothing to help the Steelers, as they finished in last place in the points standings in 1994, 330 points out of first. They once again finished last in the CFFL North, this time with a 4-10 record, and lost to the Heat in the first round of the playoffs. 1995 continued the Steelers' woes. They were in last place, 212 points out, when the league shut down. They were in second place at 4-5 in the CFFL North after they played their last game. The team still holds the CFFL record for the highest postseason winning percentage, as well as most playoff wins (7-2, .778). |
