| History The Heat began play as one of the 1992 expansion teams. They were co-owned by Joe Jamison and Pat Kiedaisch. The Heat had a poor first season, finishing 6th out of 8 teams in the points standings, 367 points out of first. They did much better in head-to-head play, going 8-6 and winning their division title. They won their first playoff game, but lost in the semi-finals to the Dolphins, 47-45. There was tension between the 2 co-owners though, and it was decided at the end of the season that they would part ways. With the Dolphins folding, all players from the Dolphins and the Heat were put into a pool, and a draft was held to fill out the rosters of the Heat and a new team, the Broncos. Heat owner Joe Jamison then entered into an alliance with Predators owner Kevin Karpuk. With the alliance stripping the Heat's best players to the champion Predators, the team did worse in 1993, finishing in 7th place, ahead of only the Invaders, who folded in the middle of the season. They finished 3rd in the CFFL North at 6-8, and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Tigers, 53-15. The contraction of 2 teams in the 1994 season didn't help the Heat, as they finished 5th out of 6 teams in the points standings, 218 points back. They finished tied for last in the CFFL North with the Steelers at 4-10, although they did win their first round playoff game against the Steelers before losing to the Tigers 62-47 in the divisional playoff. Owner Joe Jamison gave up his share of the team after the 1994 season, leaving Kevin Karpuk in complete control. The Heat were in 5th place once again when the CFFL shut down operations in the middle of the season. They were in last place in the CFFL North at 3-6 when the league shut down. |
