| History The Blue Devils were one of the original 5 CFFL teams. As of 2008, they are the only team to repeat as CFFL champions, having done it in their only 2 years of existence. Picking 4th in the inaugural CFFL Draft in 1990, the Blue Devils started out by drafting Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice with their first 2 picks. They filled out their roster with other future Hall of Famers such as Ronnie Lott, John Elway, and Troy Aikman. The Blue Devils won the first-ever CFFL title by 5 points over the Tigers. In 1991, the CFFL added head-to-head play, and the Blue Devils won their division title, going 9-5, but they lost their first and only playoff game to the Steelers, 88-45. They won their second CFFL Championship easily, beating the second-place Steelers by 105 points. Their second championship was powered by a running attack featuring Barry Sanders and two key additions: Thurman Thomas and Emmit Smith. Thomas was acquired in a trade with the Steelers in August, and Smith was acquired from the Flyers in the first week of September. Sanders, Smith, and Thomas formed the strongest rushing attack in CFFL history. After the 1991 season, owner Dan Nahirniak folded the team as he was going away to school, and in the pre-Internet days didn't feel he'd be able to run it effectively. |
