Addelle Julia Esther (Mysen) (Wilsie) Staubach

IN MEMORY

A Beloved Daughter of Muskegon, Michigan
1908 - 1986

Addelle Julia Esther Mysen

Addelle was born in 1908, the daughter of Syver Mysen of Norway,
and Lola Beers of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She was the 1st child
(eldest daughter) born 9 months to the day of Syver and Lola's
marriage. Engebret and Gusta (Hoff) Mysen, from Norway, members
of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Muskegon, Michigan,
were Addelle's Norwegian born grandparents.

Addelle's 3 other siblings were: Alice Ruth Mysen; Karl Ernest
Mysen (who died in infancy) & Karl Robert Mysen.

Left to Right: Addelle, Alice and Karl Mysen

Addelle Mysen was the 2nd woman lifeguard to be hired to work at the Lake Michigan beaches.

Addelle was the daughter of Syver Mysen, a carpenter and owner of Buck Construction Co. Her mother, Lola Beers Mysen, was raised by maiden aunts in a convent, as both her parents had died young adults.

Lola had taught a year in South Dakota, where she met Syver, who was on a construction job in the area where she taught. Lola had been raised to be a lady and knew little about housework, home and family.

Lola left her family during summers to return to Rhinelander to rest from the stressful chores. She finally stayed in Rhinelander permanently and divorced.

Addelle spent time at home with her Mysen aunts and uncles as she grew up. A deep sense of pride grew in her Norwegian roots. She developed a deep need to focus on higher and loftier life goals. She challenged herself to succeed in those things she planned to accomplish.

Addelle attended public schools and was 1st in her family to graduate from Muskegon Junior College and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was acquainted with Maurice Wilsie working while on the school magazine named, The Bay Window. They were involved with Drama Club at Muskegon Junior College. She renewed their acquaintence at the University of Michigan. Addelle was secretly married briefly to him, while both were university students. Addelle was married long enough to have 2 children, Karl Hugh Wilsie & Celia Ann Wilsie, both born in Ann Arbor. A first address, as Mrs. Wilsie, was an apartment at 710 Catherine Street.

Karl Kissing Celia

A kiss was given at the request of their mother, after Celia was pushed down the steps at the Ashley Street house by her brother.

Following Addelle's divorce from Maurice Wilsie, she had met Assistant Professor, Charles Staubach, of the University of Michigan's, Romance Language Department, while both attended rehearsals of the Ann Arbor Civic Orchestra, where they had played violin.

"Chuck" Staubach & Addelle (Mysen) Wilsie married August 28, 1937, after which Chuck legally adopted Karl and Celia.

Class Poem By Addelle Mysen

How well we love, Oh, M.H.S., Thy well-worn stairs and friendly walls, Thy rooms where mingle work and jest, Thy dear old memory-haunted hall;

Thou birthplace of ambition high That leads, in time, to all success; Success, our own, if but we try To learn thy creed of worthiness.

Although the school doth change with time, With here and there a strange new face; Undimmed, thy spirit still shall shine And fill anew each empty place.

We'll live thy motto, thrice-famed school, And "Play the game and play it square:" We'll take it, word for word, a rule To help us all life's burdens bear.

Then here's to thee, old M.H.S.; Be ever known as fair and true. May God watch o'er thee and thee bless; Tears to the old; cheers to the new!

GOLOSHES by Addelle Mysen, '26

Flap! flap! flap! The girls are marching. We hear them jingle the door If you dare remarks to say, Scortching looks will land your way, And the girls will go on flapping all the more.

Chorus: Jingle girls! right along, Clink about all day. We love to have them folded down To make us look more like a clown.

Jingle girls! right along, Clink about all day.

We hear them clank and flop around, And see goloshes sweep the ground. Jingle all the day.

Outlining Addelle's Girl Scout Activities

Maurice Wilsie commented in correspondence late in life about
his 1st wife Addelle Mysen's focus on scouting. He stated:

Addelle had been "a Girl Scout through to the bone".

I include his statement, as an extraordinaryly appropriate and accurate description, truly describing one of Addelle's deepest life time commitments.

THE GIRL SCOUT LAWS

A GIRL SCOUT'S HONOR IS TO BE TRUSTED. A GIRL SCOUT IS LOYAL. A GIRL SCOUT'S DUTY IS TO BE USEFUL & HELP OTHERS. A GIRL SCOUT IS A FRIEND TO ALL AND A SISTER TO EVERY OTHER GIRL SCOUT. A GIRL SCOUT IS CURTEOUS. A GIRL SCOUT IS A FRIEND TO ANIMALS. A GIRL SCOUT OBEYS ORDERS. A GIRL SCOUT IS CHEERFUL. A GIRL SCOUT IS THRIFTY. A GIRL SCOUT IS CLEAN IN THOUGHT, WORD & DEED.

Our Home At 824 Granger Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan

I was 6 years old, after I had completed the first Grade at Angell Elementary School, the family moved from the Ashley Street House to the Granger Avenue Home. Ashley Street was the city downtown residential area near the business district and a railroad station. After a bit it was important that we relocate more to the uptown campus area near the University of Michigan. The move to Granger Avenue was an important change in our lives. I would be attending Tappen Elementary School in 2nd grade, which was located next to Burns Park. The Junior High School was occupying space in the self same building, so that I would be going back there again to attend 7th, 8th and 9th grade. Eberbach School was just a couple of blocks closer to Packard Street near home. I'd be attending Eberbach School from 3rd grade through 6th and the family trip to Bogota', Colombia, South America, had interupted this process, so I didn't attend Eberbach for my 4th and 5th grade year.

I attended 2 schools in Bogota': "La Esquela Anexa de el Instituto Nacional Para Senoritas" was a Catholic Girl's Training School for girls wanting to enter the teaching profession. El Colegio Nuevo Granada, was an Anglo-American School. Addelle taught a 5th grade at El Colegio Nuevo Granada. One had to have, at least, 1 parent or grandparent, British or American, to attend. It was not then customary for women with her status to be employed as a teacher. Addelle was again a woman ahead of her time.
