Congregation of Christian
Brothers
Lay Volunteers in Peru
Welcome to the of the “Congregation of Christian Brothers - Lay
Volunteers in Peru” web page. We are a group of Catholics who are committed to
a period of service within the various ministries of the congregation in Peru. Living
in a community with Brothers and fellow volunteers, we seek to experience the
Kingdom of Christ through prayer and service to those in the margins of society.
The Christian Brothers work to improve education. Therefore, they are involved
in different schools and that is where much of our activity is focused. Additionally,
we participate in other ministries with groups such as the Associates of the Christian
Brothers (a lay ministry group) and other organizations.
Currently
there are volunteers in three locations in Peru. The Brothers operate a “Fey y Alegria”
school in Canto Grande, a poor city on the outskirts of Lima. Dave Thiemann, a
native of Colorado Springs is the lay volunteer that supports this ministry. He
will be joined in April by Charlie Petro from the Tampa Bay, Florida area, who
is presently completing language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
The
Brothers also have a community in the jungle town of Moyobamba. Greg McCormack,
a volunteer from San Diego, California, is a member of that community. His ministry
is aimed at establishing relationships with street kids, keeping them away from
dangerous activities and inspiring hope for their future.
Finally,
a community in the fishing port of Chimbote provides a presence for the
MundoMejor High School. Gary Mallalieu, a volunteer from Massachusetts is working
with the English and Science Departments. Another volunteer, Gerardo Garcia, is
part of the Religious Education Department.
Please
visit the respective community volunteer pages to learn more about each ministry
or each volunteer.
