September Stuff

As you can see in the transactions for Sept. 1, a number of CFCL rosters have beefed up a bit for the stretch run.  September not only means expanding rosters and increasing salary caps, but there are a few other things to start thinking about:

Awards Banquet – we need to start thinking about a date and location for this year’s banquet.  For the past three years we've met at Home Run Inn Pizza in Addison, which has worked out well, so that's probably the default option.  Usually what we do is find a date that works best for the largest number of owners and then select a location by trying to find something central to all the owners who can make that date.  If you already know of weekend dates in October when you won’t be available, let me know (I already know of a number of conflicts on October Saturdays).

Awards Voting – I hope to put an awards ballot together in the next few weeks, but it’s not too early to start giving it some thought.  As in past years, I'll select nominees for each of the categories (which are described in the Awards section of the website) and make suggestions for the write-in categories (MVP, Cy Young, etc.).  My method of selecting nominees isn't scientific or terribly thorough, and in the past I've inadvertently left off some worthy candidates.  If you'd like to suggest nominees from your team or actively lobby for votes in the Forum, I'd more than welcome it.

Opinion Survey – I will also most likely put together an end-of-season opinion survey.  If you have suggestions for survey questions – especially if you’ve got new rule changes/proposals – send ‘em on.

2008 – finally, as we ask at the end of every season, we’d like confirmation as to whether you plan to be back for next season.  With the number of out-of-towners we've got in the league, returning owners is always a question.  And this year there have been a few rather inactive owners, including a couple who have not touched their rosters in months.  Have they lost interest in the league, found a better use for their summertimes, or are they simply exercising incredible patience with their rosters?  The fact that we've reached September and two teams still have full $1.00 FAABs would seem to indicate that the answer lies somewhere along the lines of the first two theories.  Whether you've been active this season or not, if you’re considering not returning next year, please let us know so we can start the search for a replacement as soon as possible.

The Monroe Doctrine This past Wednesday evening (Thursday morning) Cooper (and his three o’clock feedings) gave me the ability to watch a rebroadcast of the Cubs/Brewers game – not one of the two they won, mind you, the one they lost to Sheets. So while I watched the Brewers take one to our beloved Cubbies for a second time, it got me to thinking. I understand why this is a rebroadcast, because the game was originally broadcast earlier that night.

I have scheduled appointments with clients and then for some reason or other had to reschedule them. That makes sense.

I don’t believe I have ever had the opportunity to lax, so when I’m being told to relax, how can I do something for the second time that I never did the first time? And that leads to trying to figure out why I would need to repeat a statement, comment or question when I’m pretty sure the first time I said it I wasn’t “peating”.

I know when we are all done working, we’ll probably be tired from a long career and working a lot of hours. But is it fair to say we are retiring? When we were working were we really tiring? Or were all of our vacations a preamble of tiring, getting ready for the vaunted retirement?

At the draft when I bid .16 on Ianetta, or Teddy bid .12 on De Aza (you’re never going to get away from this, Teddy) we both wanted to rescind our bids. When did we ever initially scind them?

When I leave in the morning, I will tell my girls (not Cooper yet because he doesn’t understand much) to mind their mom. But when I have to remind them to mind it gets very confusing.

And later this year when our kids are running around the neighborhood saying “Trick or Treat”, going back to the same house would seem to imply a retreat. What Lee did against Grant, really wasn’t a retreat as much as it was a “Get your ass back home and look for a different job.”

Hopefully the Cubs will retaliate against the Cardinals this year for the way that the Cards taliated against us last year.
