“I don’t love baseball. I don’t love most of today’s players. I don’t love the owners. I do love, however, the baseball that is in the heads of baseball fans. I love the dreams of glory of 10-year-olds, the reminiscences of 70-year-olds.” - Stan Issacs |

A Month at the Races Yowza! Seems like every year about this time we're talking about how close the race for the CFCL Championship is, and this year is no exception - the top 4 teams are separated by only four points (as of tonight's Live Standings). It's so much better than that, though -- every single team in the CFCL is involved in a race, something I don't think we've ever been able to say this late in the season. I already mentioned the quartet of the Ruffins, Kenndoza Line, Copperfields, and Rebels, but just below that group the Graging Bulls and DoorMatts are battling for 5th place, which carries as its prize the 1st round Rotation Draft pick next year and the full .06 Home Discount Budget. The two teams have been flip-flopping in the standings the past week or so, and as this exact moment are dead even with 70 points apiece. The next tier down is composed of another quartet, with the Picts, Stones, Splinters, and Red Hots all separated by - you guessed it - four points. Like all the teams above them, these four teams have been swapping spots in the standings on an almost daily basis. Finally - and this is perhaps most surprising of all - we suddenly have a race for 11th place. Only four periods ago, the Lambchops seemed to have a solid lock on last of the non-last places, holding a 17-point lead over the given-up-for-dead Da Paul Meisters. The Meisters, though - despite not spending a cent of their FAAB and not making a single roster move since the last week of May - have put on a Dallas Green Award-worthy charge, and actually vaulted past the Lambchops into 11th place. The Lambchops helped a bit by dropping a handful of points of their own, but the Meisters are suddenly back in the hunt to avoid the cellar. Speaking of the cellar, let's remember back to last year and the team that finished dead last, with a measly 22.5 points: the league-leading Dem Rebels. Proof enough that you don't need any 4-year plan to win a CFCL Championship. Who knows, this time next year I may be marveling at the epic battle between Da Paul Meisters and the Lambchops for CFCL gold... That Time of Year Next Saturday is September 1, which means two things: Rosters can expand by one
player. You can activate a player from your Reserve List on
Saturday
(Noon deadline) or on any subsequent Sunday (effective for Monday's
games) through the rest of the season. The extra player can also be a
free agent acquired during the regular Sunday transactions, but keep in
mind that free agents acquired during September receive a S contract
(unless the bid is .25 or more). Players with
S contracts are automatically released at the end of the
season, but are not eligible for Home Town Discounts next year. In order to accommodate
the extra player, the salary cap increases to 3.60. Keep in mind that it's the ACTIVE ROSTER only that
expands on September 1 – your full roster can still only be 40 players
total. This means that if you activate a 24th player for
September Roster Expansion, you're limited to 16 players on reserve.
Keep this in mind when you bid on free agents – don't assume you have an
extra roster spot to play with and can acquire a player without waiving
or releasing someone to make room. Eye on the Record Book This is also the time of year we check in on progress toward any full-season category records. Starting on the offensive side:
All other offensive records appear to be pretty safe at this late date. Pitching-wise, none of the percentage categories appear to be in jeopardy. The rate stats, on the other hand:
Finally, the records for Offensive Points, Pitching Points, and Total Points in a season all look untouchable this year.
Hometown Discount Watch In 2008, the teams that finished in 5th-12th place in 2007 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th place team's point total.
Record Book Week Ending 08/26: No new records were set this week.
