"Saying what's right and wrong with the game is an exercise in hubris and futility. The game has always held a balance between perfection and fatally flawed and it's that balance that makes the game what it is. Say what you will about the modern game, modern players, and modern owners and there's still twenty ways to show that this is the golden age."    - Will Carroll

Baseball at Ravinia

They say that more literature has been written about any other sport (though I'd imagine golf is close).  Something about baseball lends itself to artistic interpretation and metaphor, so I'd guess that baseball also ranks at the top of the list of sports songs.

Some of those songs will be performed next Sunday (July 29) at Ravinia as part of a traveling program called "The Baseball Music Project".

Apparently, the program is a multimedia presentation, featuring images and video from the Baseball Hall of Fame (screens will be set up on Ravinia's lawn) combined with live music and narration.  The narrator for this Chicago performance will be the "voice of the Cubs" at Wrigley Field, Wayne Messmer.  The presentation is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM, though Ravinia opens at 5:00 for Pre-Performance Picnicking.  Lawn tickets are $10 each (reserved seats in the pavillion are $30, I think).

My wife and I are planning on taking our boys.  If any other CFCLers are thinking of going, let me know and maybe we can meet up.

There's more information about the program at the Baseball Music Project website.  Even if you're not interested in the program, you should visit the site and check out their "demo", which is quite good.  Watch for a young Don Zimmer in one of the photos that displays during the playing of "Let's Keep The Dodgers in Brooklyn."  You can find the demo, a listing of songs in the program, and more at:

Cesar Izturis, Part 1

Well, the Cubs finally wised up and ditched the Great Outmaker.  Readers of the Daily Herald found out about the deal as follows:

Cubs trade Izturis to Pirates, call up Fox
BY JOHN LEMON
[email protected]

About this time a year ago, shortstop Cesar Izturis came to Chicago in exchange for pitcher Greg Maddux.

Thursday morning, Izturis' stay in Chicago came to an end as the Cubs traded him and a cash consideration to Pittsburgh for a player to be named later...

Notice that by-line?   That's right, it's former Lanmbchop Assistant GM, John Lemon.  When we last heard from John, he was covering high school sports for the Herald.  No matter what you think of Izturis or the Cubs, this has got to be seen as a step up for the one-time CFCLer.  Congrats John, and thanks to the Primo Lambchop himself, Eric, for pointing this out to me.

Cesar Izturis, Part 2

While self-respecting Cub fans everywhere greeted Izturis' departure with celebrations that almost equaled those greeting the arrival of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows", perhaps no one was happier to see him go than Aramis Ramirez.

Did you catch Cesar's rather bizarre celebratory ritual following a key Ramirez home run?  Click below for the video ... Izturis is the one in the blue wind breaker who approaches Ramirez after Mark DeRosa tries to play piggyback with him.

If the embedded video doesn't work, you can view it here:

The Monroe Doctrine Major League Baseball is a wonderful pastime with plenty to enjoy. But it doesn’t come without its warts. Here’s a look at what is good – and not so good about baseball.

RIGHT: It transcends generations. You can read about what Lefty Grove and Lou Gehrig did and it still means as much today as it did back then.

WRONG: All-Star game decides World Series home field advantage. It should go to the team with the best regular season record.

by Rich Bentel

RIGHT: Derek Jeter

WRONG: Baseball doesn’t have the guts to deal with Barry Bonds (or any other “star” player). Neifi Perez was suspended for 100 games? Let’s see if baseball even notices.

RIGHT: World Series games that start in the afternoon.

WRONG: World Series games that start at 8pm Central Time and end close to midnight.

RIGHT: Hosing down the infield just before game time.

WRONG: Not allowing players of all colors and creeds to participate from the very beginning.

RIGHT: You can play catch with your dad or child (cue Field of Dreams lighting and music) and have a connection. Can’t do that with golf when I hook my drive into the fairway on the left and my dad searches for his ball in the woods on the right.

WRONG: The Minnesota Humpdome and Tropicana Field

RIGHT: Wrigley Field, PNC Park and Fenway Park

WRONG: Interleague play

RIGHT: No time clock. As long as you haven’t made three outs, anything is possible.

WRONG: Wild Card Playoff system

RIGHT: Vin Scully, Peter Gammons, Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Stone

WRONG: Chris Berman, Chip Caray, John Kruk, Joe Morgan

RIGHT: Any ballplayer legging out a triple

WRONG: ESPN moving the Sunday Night Game of the Week ahead a couple of hours so they can broadcast the ESPYs in primetime (it’s a tape delay!!!! It’s not even live!)

RIGHT: The crack of a wood bat, the slap of a leather glove.

WRONG: The Gold Glove Award is often times influenced by a player’s offensive production.

RIGHT: Organ music or, even better, just crowd noise for ballpark ambiance.

WRONG: Hard rock music blaring from the speakers.

RIGHT: Twelve guys sitting around on a late March Sunday building for the future and enjoying the camaraderie.

Right and Wrong

Here's something else that's wrong -- that Rich can toil week in and week out creating these stupendous Monroe Doctrines with such little recognition from me.  I'm sure everyone's enjoyed reading them this year -- and I've told Rich this privately -- but I'm astounded and impressed with what he comes up with week after week.  Well done, Rich!  If you haven't done so yet, I encourage everyone else to drop him a note letting him know you appreciate the hard work he's done this year.  And trust me as someone who's tried coming up with new content week after week -- it is hard work.

I though this week's topic on right-and-wrong was a good one, and it gave me a chance to use a quote at the top of the report that I'd been hanging onto for a while.  It also gave me the chance to post the accompanying picture, which is one I quite enjoy.

The quote is by Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll, who is also the guy in the photo.  Yet another wrong in baseball is that someone that looks like Will Carroll gets to take someone who looks like Jenn Sterger to a Cub game.

The quote this week comes from a piece published on the Biz of Baseball website, in which 32 folks associated with baseball comment on what's right and wrong with baseball.  If Rich's piece has whetted you appetite for more, check out the article:

http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=534&Itemid=41

For now, I'll leave you with one more "wrong" in baseball.  The caps teams wear can sometimes cause an unfortunate shadow.  When the face under the bill belongs to Sid Bream, this can be quite "right".  When it's Jenn Sturger - as in the photo at the top of the Report - it's decidedly "wrong".    Luckily, we've got another photo from Will Carroll to make things right:

PS -- Rich, please consider the illustrations in this week's Report to be a "thank you" for the great work you've done with the Doctrines this year...
