"Making final cuts is what I hate most about this job. Monkeying around with people’s lives is never fun. On the other hand, when I’ve picked the team, 25 players are monkeying around with my life." - Don Zimmer

Roster Cuts

Roster cut worksheets have been e-mailed to all owners and are also available in the Download Center.  The deadline for roster cuts is 6:00 PM on March 26.  All teams must reduce their rosters to 15 or fewer players and submit the names of the players being kept to the League Secretary by this date.  Any rosters not received by March 26 will be reduced to 15 by a random method determined by the Executive Committee.

We'll Be Right Back...

Before we get to the information about the cuts, we’ve got a brief commercial interruption.  As reported in earlier messages, all CFCL fees must be paid by the time your cuts are received.  So if you haven't sent in a check yet PLEASE be sure to do so before the 27th.  I’ve already received payment from Bob, Matt B., Teddy, Matt G., Kenn, and Eric -- thanks for being proactive, guys!

As a reminder, the fees are $103.50 per team this year, which covers stat service, trophy, the banquet, and prizes.

Make checks out to David Mahlan and send them to:
                  David Mahlan
                  1431 Palmer
                  Downers Grove, IL  60516

Those of you out there who have (or want to sign up for) Paypal accounts can send me your fee payment via e-mail.  EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NOTE:  First, you must make the payment from a bank account, not with a credit card or debit card.  Second, I do not have a Paypal account, so Paypal will have to cut a check and mail it to me to cover your fees.  There’s a $1.50 per check charge for this service, which you’ll need to reimburse me for – I’m willing to make that payment option available, but I don’t want to be the one paying for it.  If you’re going to go the Paypal route, please send a payment of $105 to [email protected].

We now return to our regularly-scheduled report.

Cuts - The Gory Details

The roster cut sheets are (I think) fairly self-explanatory, and almost everyone’s been through the process at least once, so I won’t go into a lot of detail about how to fill out the form.  However, there are a number of things you should be careful to keep in mind when making your cuts.  I’ve compiled those reminders and a number of other details into a separate document I creatively titled Roster Cut Instructions.

For old pros and young renegades alike, the temptation will be to dive right in to your cuts, but I encourage everyone to at least take a quick glance at the instructions so you’re aware of all the requirements and implications of your decisions.

Submitting Your Cuts

When you e-mail your cuts, make sure you put ROSTER CUTS in the subject line – that way I will know not to open your message until I’ve submitted my cuts to Rich.

Send in your cuts as soon as possible.  I have to have them by MARCH 26 or we'll make your cuts for you.  As a reminder, your cuts are considered final as of the time you send them – that means no trades are allowed between MARCH 26 and the end of the Draft.  Once you mail in your cuts, your roster is frozen, so if you’re working on any last-minute blockbusters, make sure they’re completed and noted on your roster cut sheet before you send it.

Once protected lists have been submitted, they cannot be changed, even for moving players between Active and Reserve Lists.  EXCEPTION:  Changes may be made at the Draft ONLY to reserve players who were sent to the minors or placed on the DL between the time cuts were submitted and the start of the Draft.  You cannot move players from your Reserve List to your Active Roster after your cuts are submitted.

National League Opening Day Rosters

Draft Day (April 1) is the day before Opening Day, so the official National League rosters probably won't be set before the Draft.  Every team will probably have a few borderline players who still might get sent down to the minors before Opening Day.

Remember, you can download the 2007 Spring Training Rosters from the Download Center. This spreadsheet has up-to-date information about which players have been sent down by their NL team.

So Long TQStats, Here We Come Sportsline!

It was with bittersweet emotions that I sent off an e-mail to TQS this afternoon, canceling our membership for the 2007 season, requesting a refund, and essentially ending a relationship we’ve had for the past 9 seasons.

After kicking around the idea of using a stat service for several years, and usually deciding against it because we were unwilling to relinquish control, the CFCL’s hand was forced when it turned out that League Secretary Mahlan had a second child scheduled to arrive shortly before Opening Day 1998.  The league spent the 1997-98 off-season performing an extensive search for a suitable service and finally settled on Total Quality Stats as a perfect fit.  Of all the services we considered back then, I think TQS is the only one still in business, so from that standpoint we certainly made the correct decision.

There were little hiccups along the way, but overall the CFCL was very pleased with the service we received from TQS.  Unfortunately, recent changes to the system have once again forced our hand.  Performance problems during the 2006 season, the elimination of some key features for 2007, and a general concern about the stability of the new platform all combined to drive us away.

In a nostalgic moment this afternoon I decided to take a stroll down memory lane and was able to track down an archived version of one of our early TQS websites.  Remember this?

CFCL at TQS circa 2000

It’s tough saying goodbye to TQS after all this time, but the excitement about what our new provider has to offer will hopefully ease the pain.

It may take a few days until the Sportsline site is up and ready for business, especially with everything else that’s going on in the CFCL world this week, but my plans are to have the basics ready by the time roster cuts are submitted and, of course, full rosters loaded by the morning of Opening Day.

I’m sure there will be a learning curve for all of us, and I certainly beg your patience as I try to get comfortable with a whole new system after 9 years with TQS’s delightful and defunct transaction editor.  I’ll ask everyone to take extra special care to check things out on the new site once it’s ready and let me know ASAP if you notice anything amiss.

We won’t know for certain whether we made the “right choice” until the season is well underway, but I’m feeling pretty good about it right now.  If only I felt as good about my draft-prep situation…

The Monroe Doctrine

Another talented Chicagoan was signed by the San Diego Padres recently.  Not only did Greg Maddux sign with San Diego, but now Andy Masur will provide play by play and color commentary on XX Sports Radio (1090 AM and 105.7 FM).  This is a well deserved opportunity for the talented team player.  An opportunity I wish he was receiving at WGN.

In my opinion this was a huge loss for the Cubs and WGN.  On the Cubs broadcast side Masur always did a fantastic job filling in for Pat Hughes during Pat’s 7th or 8th inning breaks.  I was always amazed at how this guy

by Rich Bentel

(Masur) could do score and baseball news updates throughout the game and then sit in Pat’s chair for a half inning at the end of the game and sound like he had been calling the whole game. [THIS JUST IN – Pat Hughes, in his negotiation of his new contract, asked for and received an additional half inning break.  So now he only calls eight innings.  Imagine sitting down with your employer and stating that you would like to keep working for them (at a raise in pay no doubt) and do 11% less work?!!  Don’t anyone tell me that the Sandberg deal, when they signed him for $7 million a year and the previous high in baseball was $5 million per, was a bad negotiation.]

Until the Cubs signed Hughes to a long-term deal I had secretly hoped (and expected) that Masur was being groomed to take over.  Hughes has never really done it for me.  “Welllll, what kind of beverage are you drinking there, Ron?” gets kind of old by May.  Oh sure, he’s a talented play by play man and just won the 2006 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year Award, but when you’re up against Harrelson, Singleton and Joniak you BETTER win the award.

I had even heard that at one point in the 2005(?) season Hughes sat down with the then Program Director of WGN and said “I don’t know how much longer I can do this.  I need a break.  I’m exhausted.  I need a vacation.”  Exhausted from sitting at a ballpark and talking with a close friend?  I know the travel isn’t as romantic as one might think, but “exhausted”?  From sitting in a shaded booth with endless supplies of food and drink?  The bellhops carry the bags and while Masur was around, Hughes didn’t even have to remind Ron to pack his toupees or other accessories.

Based on that conversation I assumed the Cubs might move in a different (Masurly) direction once Hughes’ contract came up.  But that didn’t happen.  Could be because the Program Director changed before Hughes’ contract expired.  Could be that Hughes was rejuvenated over the last season or so by doing more Pilates in the off season to prepare him for the 162 game grind (although with Pat’s new clause of “one inning off per game” Hughes won’t broadcast 162 innings this year – the equivalent of 18 GAMES!!!!).  Who knows?  All I know is that Chicago lost another talent to the San Diego Padres.
