Period 10 While it may seem we're deep into the season already, we've only just reached Period 10. This period is significant because it's the baseline we use in determining the winner of the Dallas Green Award, which recognizes the team that improves the most during the course of the season. When we cooked up this award, we selected Period 10 at the baseline because we felt it was far enough into the season that things were becoming established, but early enough that there was still plenty of time left to make significant movement. Looking at past winners of the award, especially in recent years since we moved from 4x4 to 5x5, it's clear that there's still plenty of season left to play. The average gain for Dallas Green Award winners over the past 8 seasons has been 20 points. That would be enough to vault the 8th place team in Period 10 this year into the thick of the money spots and into contention for the Championship. It's still anyone's ballgame. On a personal note, take note of the fact that the Copperfields have won the Dallas Green Award 9 of the CFCL's 22 years, and the last two in a row. They be strong finishers and are going for a three-peat. And now that they've got Phil Nevin... Team Profiles By now I assume everyone's noticed that the team profiles have finally been posted on the website (if not, click the Clubhouse link at the top of this report). I apologize for the delay in finally getting them out there, but I hope everyone is enjoying getting to know your fellow owners a little better. I appreciate the feedback some of you have sent regarding the profiles, and hope you're sharing the positive comments with Rich, who was the driving force behind all this. A couple owners have already written to ask for changes to their profiles (both to fix typos and to change responses). Feel free to send me any revisions you want to make - although I'd rather not get into the routine of changing everyone's favorite movies every couple weeks. Enjoy! And Speaking of Favorite Movies... ... a brief public service announcement: If you're like me, you've got quite a backlog of items saved up on your Amazon Wish List. If you have any spare cash at all, now's the time to start whittling down the DVD portion of that list. Deep Discount DVD (www.deepdiscountdvd.com) has just started their bi-annual 20% off sale. Deep Discount lives up to their name, generally selling all DVDs quite a bit below regular retail, so the opportunity to take an additional 20% off represents a nice savings. To top it off, they never charge for shipping or handling. We now return to your CFCL report, already in progress... Tiny Reports I apologize for the brevity of the reports in recent weeks. Usually I like to include a little something other than a quote and the week's transactions, but work and family have been keeping me pretty well occupied lately and it's been tough enough keeping up with the barebones reports. Sorry for the lack of content. Mid-Week Move Processing Once in a while a team will submit a mid-week move and I won't get the chance to get it entered at TQS until late that night (since I can't access the site from the office). When the move doesn't show up in the live box score that night the team will often write to make sure I'd gotten the move. If you send in a mid-week move and don't see it reflected that night (or get a response from me indicating a problem with the transaction), wait until the standings are posted the next morning. Chances are that I wasn't able to get online and enter the move until very late that night. If the move doesn't show up in the stats posted the next day, then send me a reminder (since there is always the chance one slipped through the cracks) - I'll be able to fix it retroactively. TQS Alternatives A couple times this year (in fact, once in a while for a couple years now) owners have written to me expressing displeasure/concern with TQS. Often it will be problems with the live box scores either not processing or having incorrect stats showing. A couple things with this -- first, the problem may not be TQS's doing. They get their feed of in-process box scores from another provider. If that provider is down or sending bogus data, it's likely affecting all stat services the same way. Second, TQS uses separate providers for the live stat feeds (SportsTicker) and the stats they use to process the standings each morning (Stats, Inc) - that explains why the live boxes don't always match the box scores sent via e-mail each morning. That said, if there are other things that cause dissatisfaction with TQS, we can certainly investigate alternatives for next year. I haven't seen much of other stat services, but other than TQS there seem to be three other big players: All Star Stats, USA Stats, and CBS Sportsline. Actually, there's probably just two other biggies, because I seem to remember hearing that All Star has recently bought USA (or the other way around). I understand that All Star/USA are incredibly pricey (upwards of $50 per team), but Sportsline seems to be closer in price to TQS. It might be worthwhile to look at what Sportsline has to offer. Hometown Discount Watch In 2007, the teams that finished in 5th-12th place in 2006 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th place team's point total.
