"At
this time of year, I think about baseball when I wake up in the
morning.I think about it all day.And I dream about it at night. The only time I dont think about it is when Im
playing it."-
Carl Yastrzemski
The Final Standings Projector at the TQS site has always been
something of a joke; particularly after we moved to a scoring system that uses
categories that TQS doesn't do forecasts for, such as QS and Holds.
Given the unreliability of the system, it was mainly
curiosity that led Dave Holian to check it out shortly after the Draft this
year. He e-mailed me the results at the time, and I recently came
across that old e-mail. According to Dave's not, back on April 5 of this year, here's how TQS saw the final
2005 standings sorting out:
1. Kenndoza Line
2. David's Ruffins
3. David's Copperfields
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. Steve's Stones
6. Teddy's Splendid Splinters
7. Nick's Picts
8. DoorMatts
9. Dem Rebels
10. Hot Sludge Sundae
11. Da Paul Meisters
12. Eric's Lambchops
Overall, that's not half bad. Obviously, injuries and
trades have had an impact on the fortunes of some teams, but still, no team is
currently more than 3 places away from where TQS predicted them to finish back
in April.
TQS didn't do quite as good a job of nailing the
individual player projections. Dave was puzzled about how his team could
have been projected to finish near the top in QS and HoSv, yet at the very
bottom in ERA and WHIP. A little investigating led him to discover the
Rudy Seanez was projected to pitch 183 innings and post a 9.00 ERA and 2.00
WHIP. So TQS did better with the big picture than the details.
Anyway, all this begs the question, if TQS can do a fairly decent job
back on Opening Day, what do they say about the CFCL race with just over 2 weeks
to go? As of Friday September 16, the TQS Final Standings Projector says
the Reservoir Dogs will come out on top, leading the Copperfields by a mere half
a point.
It also places all of the other teams in the order they
currently stand today, including Kenndoza Line holding off the Ruffins in the
race for third place.
Should be a good one...
Call for Nominees
Give a broken-down, stressed out League Secretary a break...
If you've got any players you'd like to see on the nominees list for any of the
CFCL Awards, feel free to share them. As usual, I'll be compiling a list
of nominees to go on the ballot, but I've made omissions before, some of them
rather glaring. It's always better if I receive e-mails/posts advocating a
certain player BEFORE I publish the ballot rather than after.
Kenn's already started the ball rolling, with a post
in the Forum about a Steal of the Year candidate. I've followed his
lead and started a thread for some of the other categories. No one knows
your roster and the roster moves you've made this year better than you (I hope),
so take a look back over 2005 and submit the guys you'd like to see nominated
for awards.
