"I would be the laughing stock of the
league if I took the best left-handed pitcher in the league and
put him in the outfield." - Red
Sox manager Ed Borrow, 1918
Next Thursday is September 1, which means two things:
Rosters can expand by one player. You can activate a player from your Reserve List on Thursday (Noon
deadline) or on any subsequent Friday (effective for Saturday's games) through
the rest of the season. The extra
player can also be a free agent acquired during the regular Friday transactions,
but keep in mind that free agents acquired during September receive a B contract
(unless the bid is .25 or more).
In order to accommodate the extra
player, the salary cap increases to 3.60.
Keep in mind that it's the ACTIVE ROSTER only that expands on
September 1 – your full roster can still only be 40 players total. This means that if you activate a 24th player for September
Roster Expansion, you're limited to 16 players on reserve.Keep this in mind if you bid on free agents next Friday – don't assume
you have an extra roster spot to play with and can acquire a player without
waiving or releasing someone to make room.
Eye on the Record Book
This is also the time of year when we take a look to see if
any seasonal records are in jeopardy.
On the Offensive side, not a single
record appears to be in danger of falling. In fact, the category-leading
Copperfields will be hard-pressed to snag even as much as half the Stolen
Bases that the Bald Eagles racked up in 1988.
So, given the apparent drop-off in
offense this year, we ought to see some Pitching records fall, right? You
bet your bippy...
The seasonal ERA record of 2.82 is
probably out of the Ruffins' reach (they're at 3.28 as of this writing), but
five solid weeks could lower their WHIP of
1.17 to the record of 1.15 that the Copperfields set in 1992.
The Ruffin pitchers would have to
have a breakdown of Epic Proportions in order to avoid topping the 2004 Stones'
record in K:BB ratio. The record is
2.95, and the Ruffins are all the way up at 3.24. Of course, looking at
the Ruffin Reserve List during the course of the year, the terms "Ruffins"
and "breakdown" seem to be going hand-in-hand, so you never know...
The 2003 Lambchops hold the record
for Quality Starts in a season with 108, and
that one also seems destined to fall. Da Paul Meisters already have 96,
which means they'd only need to average just over 2 QS a week. Shouldn't
be a problem.
Not quite such a sure thing, but
still very doable, the Reservoir Dogs are poised to break the record of 160 HoSv,
currently held by the 2004 Da Paul Meisters. Hmmm.... I wonder if a team
has ever set the record in QS (or Wins) in one season, then set a new record in
HoSv (or Saves) the very next year (or vice versa)? Quite a
turn-around. Anyway, the Dogs need to average just over 7 HoSv the rest of
the way in order to break the old record.
In terms of point totals, the
Reservoir Dogs are well ahead of the record of 104.5 Total
Points set by the Stones last year, and they're just under the record
of 58 Offensive Points that the Dogs
themselves set in 2003.On the
pitching side, the Ruffins are just short of the 2003 Lambchops' record for 57 Pitching
Points, but looking at the categories, it doesn't appear the points
they'll need are available.
Hometown Discount Watch
In 2006, the teams that finished in 5th-12th
place in 2005 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring
players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The
exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th
place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th
place team's point total.
