The CFCL trade deadline is Noon on Monday August 1.This
is 21 hours after the MLB interleague trade deadline (3:00 PM Central on Sunday
July 31).
All CFCL trades must be reported, along with all
corresponding moves, by Noon next Monday. The “all corresponding moves” part means that if you make trades on
Monday you must:1) be at or under
the salary cap ($3.50), 2) have 23 active players that fit the position
requirements, and 3) have no more than 17 players on your Reserve List.
IFAB Day
Monday
August 1 is also IFAB (Interleague Free Agent Bidding) Day.All players who come to the NL between now and Monday will be eligible
for bidding (assuming they all make it onto the TQS Free Agent list).Remember, bidding is not limited to players who just came
over in trades.Players who are
currently in the free agent pool are also eligible for bidding on IFAB Day.
The deadline for IFAB Day bids is 4:00 PM Central on Monday August 1.Note
that this is 4 hours after the CFCL trade deadline – this will give everyone a
chance who made trades on Monday morning a chance to calculate room remaining
under the salary cap, etc.
If I get the chance, I will publish current salary levels and
FAAB balances for all teams on the website on Saturday or Sunday. If you want to be proactive, check the Excel rosters in the Download
Center to make sure what I have down as your FAAB balance matches what you think
it is.Remember, you can hover your
cursor over the cell that contains your FAAB balance and a list will display
showing all the free agents you’ve acquired during the year and what you paid
for them.
Workday
The previous two years we've been lucky in that the CFCL
Trade Deadline and IFAB Day fell on the weekend. That meant that I was
free most of the day to check e-mail, send out updates, verify associated moves,
etc. This year, the big day falls during the week when I've got that, you
know, job thing keeping me busy.
I'll try my best to post updates about trades as they are
made, but I'd advise everyone to take extra care to make sure they've got their
transactions in order. Make sure you include all necessary associated
moves, are under the salary cap, don't overspend your available FAAB, etc.
Chances are good that I won't be able to respond quickly if any of your moves
are invalid, and I definitely won't be able to track you down via phone.
Likewise, I'll be sticking strictly to the deadlines -- your trades/bids/moves
must be in and complete by the appropriate deadline or they're no
good.
Ryno
When Darryl Kile passed away in the middle of the season a
few years ago, I printed a recap of his CFCL career in the weekly report.
Now, on a much happier occasion as one of my all-time favorite players prepares to enter the Hall of Fame,
I have the chance to do the same for Ryne Sandberg.

1984
Draft Day, 1984:

1985: Resigned by David's Copperfields (.34C)
1986
Roster
Freeze Day, 1986: Signed to 4-year guaranteed long term contract
by David's Copperfields (.49G)
At
the time, this was the longest contract in CFCL history. The 4-year length
has since been matched by Vladmir Guerrero (Copperfields) and Albert Pujols (DoorMatts).
1987
Roster Freeze Day,
1987: Resigned by David's Copperfields (.49F)
December
30, 1987: Traded by David's Copperfields with Ron Darling,
Rick Aguilera, and Shane Rawley to David's Ruffins for John Shelby, Gerald
Young, and RJ Reynolds.
This
was mainly a dump of Sandberg's salary/contract on my part, but given what else
I gave up, you'd have thought I'd get something of value in
return...
1988
Roster Freeze Day,
1988: Resigned by David's Ruffins (.49E)
1989
Roster Freeze Day,
1989: Released by David's Ruffins (.05 buyout penalty)
Draft Day, 1989:
Drafted by McGuire's Picks (.22D)
July
25, 1989: Traded by McGuire's Picks to David's Copperfields
for Tom Foley and their 1990 1st round Minor League Draft Pick.
Ok,
I make up for not getting much for Sandberg in the 1987 trade by not giving up
much to get him back a couple years later...
1990
February,
1990: Traded by David's Copperfields to Eric's Lambchops
for Todd Benzinger.
Ooops,
there I go again. Sandberg was coming off a good year and I swap him for
Todd Benzinger?
Roster Freeze Day,
1990: Resigned by Eric's Lambchops (.22C).
Winter
1990-91: Traded by Eric's Lambchops to Dem Rebels.
One
of the great mysteries of the CFCL. The details of this trade seem to have
vanished from the CFCL archives. All that is known is that Sandberg
finished the 1990 season on the Lambchops' roster and appears in the Rebels'
roster cut form at the beginning of 1991. It's not known what the Rebels
gave up to get Sandberg from the Chops, but as both owners have served on the
Executive Committee during their tenures, it would have been easy for one of
them to slip into the Records Room and erase the report of the trade if it was
particularly embarrassing to them...
1991
Roster Freeze Day,
1991: Signed to 2-year guaranteed long term contract by Dem
Rebels (.22E).
1992
Roster Freeze Day,
1992: Resigned by Dem Rebels (.27B)
August
8, 1992: Traded by Dem Rebels to David's Ruffins for
Anthony Young and Mike Sciocia.
Interesting...
Anthony Young was the subject of a bit of intrigue between the Rebels and
Ruffins during the 1992 Draft. It was near the end of the Draft and the
Ruffins had one pitching slot left and just a few cents to spend. They
desperately wanted hotshot young Mets' pitcher Anthony Young to fill that
slot. The bidding progressed beyond what the Ruffins had available to
spend, seemingly cutting off the chance for them to own Young. However, a
quick huddled conference between Ruffin GM Dave Holian and Head Rebel Rich
Bentel led to an arrangement. The Rebels would continue bidding on Young
with the understanding that if they got him they could trade him to the Ruffins
immediately following the Draft.
The
plan worked, with the Rebels drafting Young for .14. The trade was consummated
when the Draft was over and the Ruffins had their prize of Anthony Young.
After all that hoopla, the Ruffins ended up sending Young back to the Rebels
later in the season, after he had compiled a 4.29 ERA and 2 wins as a Ruffin.
What's
this all got to do with Sandberg? Well, nothing, really, but I'm on a
Historian Roll and the trade the Ruffins and Rebels worked out is fascinatingly
incredible. Along with Young, the Ruffins got minor leaguer Wil Cordero
and the Rebels' 1st round Rotation Draft pick in 1993. What did the Rebels
get? Dave Righetti, who ended up having a pretty poor season. Oh,
and one minor league throw-in - the skinny younger brother of a Dominican
pitcher for the Dodgers. Kid by the name of Pedro Martinez.
Ok,
back to Ryno...

sad day. Surprising, though understandable considering the numbers

Rich
proves once again what a great guy he is. Here's what I wrote in the
weekly report when this one was announced: "The
Rebels did a good deed for CFCL history by sending retiring second baseman Ryne
Sandberg to the Copperfields for a mere 15th Round Draft Pick.
Observers of this year’s pennant race may be scratching their collective heads
at this one, as it’s doubtful Ryno will have a much of impact on the
Copperfield’s pennant drive. What the trade does, though, is allow Sandberg to
end his CFCL career where he started it back in 1984. That year, he was drafted
by the Copperfields in the CFCL’s inaugural draft for .34. A couple years
later, he was signed to a three-year guaranteed contract for a whopping .49.
Financial considerations eventually forced the Coppers to deal him to the
Ruffins, but they’re happy to bring him back for the last month of his stellar
career." Thanks Rich. I
don't know if I said it at the time, but this meant a lot to me. And you
didn't even require Pedro Martinez in exchange...

Released by David's Copperfields as part of Winter Waivers after Sandberg
announced his retirement.
