September Doings
Awards Banquet – we need to start
thinking about a date and location for this year’s banquet.
Probably the best way to go about it is to find a date that works best
for the largest number of owners and then select a location by trying to find
something central to all the owners who can make that date.
If you already know of weekend dates in October when you won’t be
available, let me know. In the
meantime, meantime, it wouldn't hurt to start kicking around ideas for a
location. If I get the chance I'll
start a thread on the Forum for this.
Awards Voting –I’ll be putting
an awards ballot together in the next few weeks, but it’s not too early to
start giving it some thought. As in
past years, I'll select nominees for each of the categories (which are described
in the Awards section of the website) and make suggestions for the write-in
categories (MVP, Cy Young, etc.). My
method of selecting nominees isn't scientific or terribly thorough, and in the
past I've inadvertently left off some worthy candidates.
If you'd like to suggest nominees from your team, or actively lobby for
votes in the Forum, I'd more than welcome it.
Opinion Survey –I’ll also be
preparing the traditional end-of-season opinion survey.
If you have items you want me to touch on, let me know – especially if
you have any new rule changes you'd like to suggest.
Winter Waivers
–sometime shortly after the season ends, all CFCL rosters must be
reduced to 23 players (including both major league and minor league players).
I’ll be announcing the deadline for submitting cuts soon, but in the
meantime it wouldn’t hurt to start thinking about which 23 players you want to
keep. Remember – players on B
contracts are automatically released the day after the season ends.
2005 –
finally, as we ask at the end of every season, we’d like confirmation as to
whether you plan to be back for next season.
If you’re not planning on returning, please let us know so we can start
the search for a replacement as soon as possible.
The Best Ever?
Steve and I have been swapping e-mails and Instant Messages
on a nearly daily basis going over the previous day's events and the various
ways the 2004 pennant race can sort itself out.
Even a cursory glance at the standings reveals how close things are, and
they appear even closer when you look at some of the individual categories.
These discussions quickly evolved into theorizing about how
2004 compares with pennant races of the past. Are we nearing the end of the Greatest CFCL Season Ever?
One season that immediately springs to mind is 1991, where the Six Packs,
Eagles, and Lambchops finished within 1 point of first place - as described back
in the July
31 Report.
Recent years, though, have had some very close races of their
own, including some that went right down to the final game of the season, and
one where a single earned run decided the Championship.
Here, then, are links to the reports that contained the
annual Pennant Race Review (prior to the last week of the season) or Pennant
Race Recap (after the end of the season):

It's clear that 2004 already stands among the most
competitive seasons ever, and the final month will tell if this year can truly
be called the best ever. Stay
tuned…
Topper Watch
In 2005, the teams that finished in 5th-12th
place in 2004 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring
players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The
exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th
place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th
place team's point total.
Based on the standings through last Thursday, here are the
teams that would receive Topper Budgets for use in the 2005 Draft and the amount
each team would receive:
