This is one of those things that have nothing to do with the
CFCL or baseball, just me using my little corner of the Internet to spread the
word about something good.
For some time now there's been a
little "running book" icon on the main page, just above the MLB
headlines. If any of you have ever
clicked on this icon, you were taken to a delightful website called BookCrossing.com.More than just a website, it a gathering of booklovers and, more
importantly, the hub of a worldwide book exchange.
Here's the concept in a
nutshell:BookCrossing
members register books at the website, and each book receives its own
BookCrossing ID number.The
bookcrosser writers this BCID on an explanatory sticker and pastes it
inside the book's front cover.They
then leave the book somewhere – on a park bench, in a coffee shop, a
phone booth, a hotel lounge, the pocket behind an airplane seat –
anywhere the book might be found. They then post "release notes" for that specific
book on the BookCrossing website.
The hope is that someone, either another bookcrosser
or a non-member, will find the book, go to bookcrossing.com, enter the
book's BCID and report that they've "caught" the book.Hopefully, that person will read the book, post their
thoughts about it, then send it back on its way for another reader to
find.
Theoretically,
the book will travel the globe over time and have its entire journey
detailed on the website.
The
person who originally released the book can follow it on its way, watching its
progress (you get e-mail notification whenever someone makes a journal entry for
one of your books), and each subsequent "catcher" can look up the
book's history to see where its been and who's read it.
I say "theoretically" because not everyone who
finds a book bothers to record their catch on the website, so many books
(unfortunately, probably the majority) vanish without a trace.Still, it's great fun releasing books, as well as trying to track them
down. You can use the website to
find books that have been released in your area and go hunting for them – you
can even sign up for e-mail notification of when a book is released nearby.
I've been a BookCrossing member for about a year now and have
released maybe a dozen books (three have been reported as caught). My problem is that I love my books TOO much, and can seldom bring myself
to give them up.Those books I have
released are mostly books I didn't care for or had no intention of reading (I've
been releasing a lot of my mom's romance novels that were left over from the
garage sale), so my bookshelf (http://bookcrossing.com/referral/copfield)
isn't necessarily a reflection of my reading tastes.
I love the idea of bookcrossing, though, and will be making
more of an effort to put some books out there.I'd also encourage any of you other booklovers who have
volumes gathering dust on your shelves to get involved as well.
Topper Watch
In 2005, the teams that finished in 5th-12th
place in 2004 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring
players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The
exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th
place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th
place team's point total.
Based on the standings through last Thursday, here are the
teams that would receive Topper Budgets for use in the 2005 Draft and the amount
each team would receive:
