"Baseball is the American success story … It is, moreover, a great common ground on which bartenders and bishops, clergymen and bosses, bankers and laborers meet with true equality and understanding.  The game has proved in everyday language that democracy works."    - J. G. Taylor Spink

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Independence Day holiday. In between the picnics and parties and fireworks, be sure to take a few minutes and remember what the day is really about.

Roster Moves Related to Trades

I've had a couple questions about what's allowed when it comes to roster moves and the salary cap in terms of trades. Here are some key points related to these issues, copied from a report posted last year about this time:

If you trade a hitter for a pitcher, you ARE allowed to activate a hitter from your reserve list to replace the guy you traded away. Likewise, you MUST reserve a pitcher to make room for the guy you acquired (unless you want to put the new pitcher on reserve himself). The same type of thing holds true if you trade a catcher for a shortstop.

You are NOT allowed to make additional moves that aren’t related to the trade. For example, if I trade Adam Eaton for Barry Bonds, I can reserve Wily Mo Pena (to make room for Bonds) and activate Jim Brower (to replace Eaton). But I can’t also reserve Todd Jones and activate Todd Van Poppel – neither one of those guys had anything to do with the trade. Making a trade doesn’t give you the chance to do other roster shuffling.

You are NOT allowed to shuffle your roster around to fit the new guys you acquired under the salary cap. If you acquire three .25 pitchers in a trade and their salaries put you over the current salary cap, you’ll have to put one or two of them on reserve until the next transaction deadline and do your roster shuffling there. This doesn’t mean you can’t reserve a .30 pitcher and put one of the new .25 players in his spot. It means you can’t reserve a .30 outfielder and replace him with a .01 outfielder in order to get your salary cap down – as in the example above, the outfielders weren’t involved in the trade.

Topper Watch

In 2005, the teams that finished in 5th-12th place in 2004 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th place team's point total.

Based on the standings through last Thursday, here are the teams that would receive Topper Budgets for use in the 2005 Draft and the amount each team would receive:

Week Ending 7/3:  The Stones and Copperfields both broke the previous record for Total Bases in a week (158), which had been set by the Reservoir Dogs a year ago this week.  The Stones set the new mark at 195, shattering the old record by 37 bases.

The Stones fell on Run Scored short of tying the old weekly mark.
