Keeping Score
A few weeks back, Derek Zumsteg at Baseball Prospectus wrote
a great article about the art and challenges of scoring baseball games.
In the article he described a new feature at ESPN.com which, if you
haven't seen yet, you should check out.
The Stat Pack (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/features/statpack)
is a customized scorebook – almost a program – for each of the day's major
league games. Provided in the pack
is Matchup page with the game's anticipated starters and various information for
each team (record, expected record (I assume based RS and RA), and various stat
totals); a scoresheet for each team, which includes a roster with uniform
numbers; four pages of detailed hitting and pitching stats (one page for each
team's hitters and one for each team's pitchers), and a page of game notes.
All this is available in PDF format for easy downloading and
printing. Whether you keep score as
you watch games or not, it would be worthwhile to print out the stat pack for
easy access to stats during the game. I'll
add a link to the Stat Pack under the set of Today's Games links on the main
page.
In his article, Zumsteg also mentioned the site www.baseballscorecard.com
as a resource for blank scorecards you can print if you're unhappy with the ones
they sell at the ballpark. The
Download area of the page provides dozens of different style score sheets to
choose from, including one that's designed specifically for children.
The kids' score sheet allows them to simply track the progress of the
runners around the bases without getting into all the detail of how the hitters
reach base or are retired (though there's a little room to squeeze that in if
you want). We took the kids to the
Kane County Cougars game this week, so I printed off one of the kids' scorecards
and my 8-year-old, Andy, used it to score a game for the first time.
His attention lapsed here and there, but he said he had a great time
doing it.
In addition to the blank score cards, the Gallery page at www.baseballscorecard.com
provides scans of completed scorecards. Scorecards
of interest: Fergie Jenkins' last
career shutout, the "Sandberg game" from 1984, the 1998 Wild Card game
between the Cubs and Giants, and the Wood vs Clemens contest at Wrigley in 2003.
Well worth checking out!

I recently discovered that Sports Illustrated's website
provides access to a searchable database of the magazine's covers from 1954 to
the present. Type in
"cubs", click search, and you're shown two pages of thumbnails of SI
covers featuring Cub players, including the.
You can click on each individual cover to view a larger version.
Follow this link to get to the search page and have a ball:

Topper Watch
In 2005, the teams that finished in 5th-12th
place in 2004 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring
players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The
exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th
place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th
place team's point total.
