Draft Recap

Catching up on something I should have covered last week, thanks to everyone for making the 2004 CFCL Draft so speedily successful. Once more, special thanks to Rich for arranging the splendid accommodations for us, and also for manning the bidding spreadsheet that allowed us to communicate with Ruffin Headquarters in Greensboro.

Speaking of the spreadsheet, it also tracks the name, team, salary, and auction time of every player acquired. Using this data, I'm able to present the following Draft Day Statistics:

Total Time of Auction (including breaks)

7 hours, 21 minutes

Longest Player Auction

Ramon Hernandez (5 minutes, 26 seconds)

Average Play Auction

2 minutes

Longest Round

Rounds 6 and 7 (39 minutes)

Time lost to technical problems

7 minutes

Time spent on breaks

41 minutes

Overall, the auction was 16 minutes shorter than last year's Draft. Considering the seemingly brisk pace, that may not seem like a lot. But remember this – we auctioned off 140 players in 2003. This year, we sold 162 players – nearly a full CFCL roster's worth. Last year, we didn't have a single full round that was shorter than our longest rounds this year.

The full record for this years draft can be viewed at: http://www.geocities.com/cfclhist5/2004/04draftrecord.html

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention our two new owners. Kenn and Teddy both seemed to step right in as if they were long-time owners. Which is good, because I realized later that we completely forgot to do any kind of introductions at the beginning of the Draft. It didn’t seem to matter, though, as they seemed to have no trouble fitting in. Still, a belated welcome to Kenn and Teddy!

New Links

I've added a couple links to the Main web page that I want to call your attention to.  Both are in the light blue area on the left-hand side of the page, under a new heading, Current Season.

2004 Weekly Report Archive – This is something I've wanted to add for a long time.  The link will take you to a page that provides access to the reports for all the previous weeks of the season.  Note that links are there for the full season already, but obviously the links for future weeks won't work.  When I get my act together, the reports for past seasons will also be available via the Season Histories in the History section (seasons 2000 – 2002 are available now).

2005 Rotation Draft Pick Tracker – This listing of the draft picks currently owned by each team has always been accessible via a link in the weekly report, but it was cumbersome to get to if you weren't already viewing the report.  Hopefully locating a link on the main page will make it easier for everyone to use.

Roster Check

I've gotten to the point where I think I've gotten salaries and contracts correct on the rosters at TQS and the Excel rosters in the Download Center.  If you haven't done so yet, please spend a few minutes going over your roster in both places to make sure everything agrees with your records.  Matt G. has already done this and he did find a few things that needed to be fixed.  Chances are those weren't the only errors, so be sure to review your roster details.

Major League M-Contract Keepers

Two players were kept on their CFCL team's Reserve List going into the Draft and eventually made their NL team's Opening Day roster.  These players are:

Jason Bay (DoorMatts)
Duaner Sanchez (By Kennen)

Since Bay and Sanchez were in the majors but did not count against their team's Draft Day budgets, neither one of them can be activated or traded prior to July 1.

Topper Watch

In 2005, the teams that finished in 5th-12th place in 2004 will receive a budget of up to .06 to use toward reacquiring players who had played out their option with the team (B-contract players). The exact amount each team receives will be based on how far behind the 5th place team they are at the end of the year, in terms of a percentage of the 5th place team's point total.

Based on the standings through last Thursday, here are the teams that would receive Topper Budgets for use in the 2005 Draft and the amount each team would receive:
