Latest CFCL Bulletin and Roster Changes

"Midsummer baseball feels as if it would last forever; late-season baseball becomes quicker and terser, as if sensing its coming end, and sometimes, if we are lucky, it explodes into brilliant terminal colors, leaving bright pictures in memory to carry us through the miserable months to come." - Roger Angell

CFCL Awards

Soon (hopefully) I’ll be posting information about voting on CFCL Awards. Voting will take place using an on-line ballot, just like last year.

To prepare, you can visit the Awards section of the CFCL Internet Headquarters (http://members.aol.com/dmahlan/award-fm.html), which lists a description for each of the awards as well as past winners. Remember that voting for MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year are done on a write-in basis, so start giving it some thought.

Race Review

Just a week ago, there were days where the Hard Hats had pulled within half a point of the front-running Lambchops, and even tied them on one day. Since then, however, the Lambchops have steadily pulled away and at the time of this writing they’re up by 7.5 points. The size of that lead belies how close the race is, however, as there are still plenty of points in play for both teams – even with only three games left.

And while the Lambchop-Hard Hat battle is the most visible race, it is by no means the only one. The Reservoir Dogs and Tenacious B are locked in a mortal battle for 3rd place and stand only half a point apart. Likewise, only a point-and-a-half separates Da Paul Meisters from the Ruffins in the fight for 5th place and the #1 draft pick in each round of the 2004 Rotation Draft.

Things really get intense in the second division. The Six Packs are probably the CFCL team that is most secure in their position. They seem to have a solid hold on 7th place, but the Stones are only three points behind. After that, only 3.5 points separate the DoorMatts, Dem Rebels, Picts, and Copperfields.

What it all boils down to is this: for the first time in a long time (perhaps ever), every CFCL team enters the final three games with the chance to finish in

But just how possible will it be for any of the 12 CFCL teams to pick up 2-3 points at this late date? Never fear, as in years past we’re here to break down each of the categories and identify exactly where points can be won and lost. Usually, we focus just on the contending teams, but since pretty much every team is in contention for something, we’ll just go category-by-category and identify the spots point movement seems possible.

Total Bases: Things are tight in the bottom portion of this category, with a few teams vying for points. The Picts are 12 bases ahead of the Ruffins, while the Copperfields trail the Ruffins by just 2 bases.

Runs: The Runs category will be key in the race for third place, as the Reservoir Dogs lead Tenacious B by only 2 Runs. The Six Packs can play spoilers here by nabbing a point away from the Hard Hats, who are just 3 Runs the Packs. Meanwhile, the Meisters can help the Hard Hats out by stealing a point from the Lambchops – the Meisters are only 2 Runs behind the Chops.

RBIs: RBIs is another key category in the Reservoir Dogs vs Tenacious B battle. The Dogs trail the Tenacious ones by only 1 RBI for the lead in the category. Farther down, the Rebels are only 3 RBI behind the Stones.

Stolen Bases: In Stolen Bases, the Picts can do the Hard Hats a favor as they’re only 1 SB behind the Lambchops. In fact, the Hard Hats could really help themselves out if they put their running shoes on this weekend. The Hats are just 4 SB behind the Picts and 5 behind the Lambchops. 5 SB is a lot to make up in a couple days, but it’s not impossible. Also in this category, the Ruffins and Stones are deadlocked in SB – chances are one of them will pick up half a point at the other’s expense by the end of the season.

On Base Percentage: Three teams are battling for points here, with the Ruffins holding a slim .0004 lead over Tenacious B, while the Lambchops are only .0011 behind TB.

ERA: Things are mighty tight in ERA, with the DoorMatts, Stones, and Ruffins separated by just 0.002. Farther down in the rankings the Six Packs lead the Reservoir Dogs by the same margin.

WHIP: Only 0.015 in WHIP separates the DoorMatts, Ruffins, Tenacious B, and Stones. While it will be hard to make a significant move in the course of 2 days, it’s possible someone could nudge up or down a place before the end of the year.

K/BB: Two races to watch here – the Ruffins are only 0.01 ahead of the Reservoir Dogs, while the Stones lead Tenacious B by that same 0.01 margin and the Copperfields are only 0.01 behind Tenacious B.

Quality Starts: The Reservoir Dogs could take points away from the Lambchops, while the Meisters could pass the DoorMatts in this category. The Chops currently hold a 2 QS lead over the Dogs and the Meisters are only 1 QS behind the DoorMatts. Much will depend on how the starting rotations sort out and which pitchers get starts in the final couple of days.

Holds + Saves: Over half the CFCL teams can either gain or lose points in this category over the next couple days. The Stones and Copperfields are currently tied at the top of the ranking, and Da Paul Meisters are only 2 HoSv behind them. Things get even tighter after that, where the Lambchops lead the Picts by just 1 HoSv and are only 2 HoSv ahead of Tenacious B and the Hard Hats. If there’s any place the Hats can take a significant chunk out of the Lambchops’ overall lead, this would be it. Tenacious B realize there are significant points available here – they loaded their pitching staff with relievers for the final two games.
