The Nerd Contingent ("Trading the Gator" Update)

The quote at the top of this page comes from a short article appearing in the October issue of Chicago Magazine.  The article discusses "Trading the Gator" and promotes the October 19th screening at the Chicago Historical Society.

I've talked to Brad, and he wants to make it clear that the words "geeks are cool" are not his and do not specifically refer to the CFCL.  Brad claims that when he was being interviewed for the article, he simply quoted a sociology professor (or someone like that), and the quote was mistakenly misattributed in the final article.  Right, Brad; we believe you...

It's nice to see the film getting such high profile exposure (Chicago Magazine is supposedly read by 1.5 million people each month).  I don't even mind being referred to as a "baseball geek" - heck, I've often called myself that in the past.

The only thing that kind of bothers me is the implication that Eric reacted somehow insensitively to the deal of Darryl Kile.

Knowing Eric personally, and having experienced his reaction to the Kile tragedy, I know that wasn't the case.  And I thought the Producers did a good job of portraying the situation - showing Eric's shock at Kile's death and his sympathy for the family, etc.  To me, it was pretty clear that Eric reacted very much as a caring human being first and a fantasy owner second.

It could be that this was easier for me to see that in the film because I know Eric, or it could be that the author only remembered certain aspects of Eric's reaction, or that Chicago Magazine latched on to a very compelling story development.  Either way, it's unfortunate that it is portrayed the way it is in the article.

In other Gator news, I also talked to Brad about the October 19th screening and told him of our plans to attend and have the Awards Banquet following the screening.  As I mentioned last week (or the week before), the Historical Society's website states a Q&A session with the filmmakers will follow the screening.  Brad said he would like the CFCL to take part in the Q&A as well.  Obviously, no one will be required to do so, but whoever is comfortable doing so (and no one seemed to shy away last time) would be appreciated.  According to Brad, the people he talked to following the premiere screening really enjoyed seeing the league members "live" and having the opportunity to ask questions.

In addition, Brad said he was trying to get Dan Okrent, Bill James, and Walter Shapiro to make appearances, though he admitted this was an extreme long-shot.

In terms of attending the screening, Brad says there is a "suggested" $5 donation for entrance to the Chicago Historical Society, though there is no charge for the screening itself.  That $5 will also get you admission to the "Chicago Sports!  You Shoulda Been There!" exhibit, in case you want to arrive early to check it out.

We'll make final plans for the screening and banquet (Chicago World Series permitting) as the date approaches.  For those who can't attend the screening but are hoping to make it to the banquet afterwards, I would imagine we'll schedule the banquet for 4:00 or 5:00 at a restaurant nearby.

CFCL Wedding Bells

Another member of the CFCL will be taking the matrimonial plunge next month.  John Lemon, Assistant GM of the 2002 Champion Lambchops will be tying the knot in a couple short weeks.  Note how John wisely scheduled his wedding for AFTER the regular season is usually over, instead of during the season’s final week – unlike a certain other owner in this league (ahem – me – cough).

Many congratulation and felicitations to Mr Lemon and his bride.

2003 Opinion Survey

By now you should have received an e-mail providing a link to the CFCL End-of-Season Opinion Survey.  If not, you can access it here:

http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?E1H3GTAYB704E5WYJ0BFPYNC

Please take a few minutes to fill it out and provide feedback on the season and input for the future.  The survey expires in less than a week, so be sure to fill it out by Wednesday September 24.

If you'd like to ponder things over a bit before filling it out, here's a quick rundown of what it covers:

Whether you're returning for 2004

Availability for the Awards Banquet (if it's postponed by a Chicago World Series)

Thoughts about the new weekly transaction deadline

Thoughts on the new way of handling players who go to the AL

Feedback on the various CFCL web pages and reports

Feedback, thoughts, and reactions concerning each of the 10 scoring categories, and about the new 5x5 format in general
