Trading the Gator According to Producer Brad, a screening of the documentary Trading the Gator has been scheduled for 2:00 PM on Sunday October 19 at the Chicago Historical Society. The Producers would once again like to have a nice representation of CFCL owners at the screening, so be sure to mark it down on your calendar. Since we usually get together in October anyway, what would everyone think of scheduling the Awards Banquet for later that afternoon? If I recall, everyone’s usually available Sunday afternoons. We could attend the screening at 2:00, then go someplace in the area for the banquet. The Chicago Historical Society is in Lincoln Park (Clark and North), so there should be plenty of places in the area. Let me know if that plan appeals to you. This Week's Featured League Each week (or close to it) I feature the web page of a fantasy baseball league that I’ve surfed across. Note that this is NOT intended to be a "review" of each site, nor is it intended to be a competition. It’s simply a way of exploring the fantasy baseball community beyond the CFCL and a way of recognizing those leagues with a presence on the Internet. This week’s featured page belongs to the Luis Gomez Memorial League (LGML): http://www.hangingcurveball.com/lgml/ The LGML is a 12-team, NL-only, standard 4x4 Rotisserie League. The league appears to be in its 14th season, though the lack of a History page on the site makes it difficult to tell. The league’s namesake is the light-hitting infielder who played for the Twins and Braves in the 70s and early 80s. Gomez is so honored, according to the page, because he proved "even the little guy can play the greatest game on earth." How poor a hitter was Gomez? Baseball-reference.com lists his most-similar batter as Mario Mendoza, he of the "Mendoza Line" fame. Of course, given the choice of having my name go down in baseball legend as the ultimate benchmark for ineptitude at the plate and having a fantasy league named after me, I’d take the fantasy league any day. Anyway, on to the page. When you visit, make sure you have your volume adjusted, as there’s some music to accompany your browsing. The main page includes reports of trades and other player news (though the most recent of these is dated 12/21/02), a poll, and links to other pages in the site. Other pages in the site you can link to include the standard Statistics, Rosters, and Rules. The thing I really liked, though, was the Owner Profiles (click the Team/Owner Profiles link on the left side of the page). The league has a standard questionnaire that each owner completed and each owner’s responses are posted on a separate page. The questions range from baseball-related (favorite team/player/park) to more probing, philosophical queries (who would you like to play poker/strip poker with, favorite comic strip, etc.). The profiles really give you a sense of the owners and the spirit of community in the league. Though there’s not a lot of content at the site, the Owner Profiles really make it worth the visit. Plus, any page whose heading proclaims "Get rid of the Designated Hitter" in Latin is OK in my book. In fact this week’s quote at the top of the page is in tribute to the LGML.
Record Book Week Ending 8/8: No new records were set this week.
