Latest CFCL Bulletin and Roster Changes

06/14/03

"I remember the smell of fresh grass and the sun and the clean air. Now, my boy comes down to the field and we have artificial turf and lights at night. You mostly smell stale hot dogs and phony grass, but the idea of baseball is still there. Baseball is an inheritance that’s passed down from generation to generation." - Nelson Briles

Matt's Trade Comments

If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to check out Matt Grage’s contributions to the Message Board thread called "6th of June, 2003: Copperflop…" Matt does an exhaustive, and no doubt exhausting, examination of the trades made in the CFCL over the past couple years, with special emphasis on trades that were considered lopsided dumps at the time they were made.

You may disagree with some of Matt’s evaluations, but you’ll have to agree the post are another masterpiece from the keyboard of the owner who is quickly becoming the CFCL’s most prolific and entertaining poster…though we’re still waiting for the second half of his 2003 CFCL predictions. I saw a preview of them at the documentary screening, and all I can say is "Boy, is he off!" Accuracy ain’t his forte, but this comments are mighty entertaining.

Happy Father's Day

To all you Dads and Dads-to-be out there, hope you have a great Father’s Day. Hope you have a great day and, as always, that your favorite team wins.

This Week's Featured League

Each week (or close to it) I feature the web page of a fantasy baseball league that I’ve surfed across. Note that this is NOT intended to be a "review" of each site, nor is it intended to be a competition. It’s simply a way of exploring the fantasy baseball community beyond the CFCL and a way of recognizing those leagues with a presence on the Internet.

This week’s Featured League Web page belongs to the Atlanta Firecracker League:

http://www.danan.com/afl/2003/

The AFL is the first non-Rotisserie-style league that we’ve featured. The AFL is a points-based league in which teams accumulate a certain number of points for an RBI, a certain number for a pitcher’s win, etc.

The quote at the top of the page is "You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." Just for old time’s sake, we’ll have a little trivia contest – where does that quote come from? No prize or anything – actually, we’ll do this: whoever responds with the source of the quote will get an extra bonus pack of baseball cards at the banquet this fall. Ok, back to the AFL website.

The first thing you come to is the Daily Double, which is updated (as the name implies), daily. It provides the previous days’ points and updated standings for the week and year. This page scores big points for "upkeep." I first visited the site on June 11. I had just finished watching the Astros no-hit the Yankees and started to hunt for web pages to feature. By the time I got to the AFL site, there was already a note about the no-hitter posted on the Daily Double. Talk about timeliness...

A weekly report, the Three Run Double, is also provided (click on the TRD 2003 link in the League Menu). TRD is a weekly update on the standings with a note from Commissioner and write-ups on each team. It’s hard enough for me to dream up something clever and worthwhile to write in the weekly CFCL report – I can’t imagine trying to do it for every team.

Back on the Daily Double page, the AFL features three semi-regular contributors to the web page who deliver the following three columns: Voice of the Purist, Situational Lefty, and Observations from the Scribe (locate these in the lower left corner of the Daily Double). All three are very well-written, thoughtful, and thought provoking. High quality stuff.

Finally, looking at the standings, I noticed a team named the Sparkwood One-Eyed Jacks. I believe I know what this is a reference to – if this strikes a chord with anyone else out there, send me an e-mail and let me know where the name comes from. Anyone who answers correctly (or at least gives the answer I’m looking for) will get bonus baseball cards.
