This Week's Featured League

Each week (or close to it) I feature the web page of a fantasy baseball league that I’ve surfed across. Note that this is NOT intended to be a "review" of each site, nor is it intended to be a competition. It’s simply a way of exploring the fantasy baseball community beyond the CFCL and a way of recognizing those leagues with a presence on the Internet.

This week’s Featured League Web page belongs to the BML:

http://www.cybercreate.com/bml/index.shtml

Wow. Wow. If you visit any of the league pages I suggest this year, visit this one. And prepare to spend considerable time there. What a well-done, informative, and entertaining site. This is everything a fantasy league web site should be. Wow.

Before I continue gushing, here are the essential stats: BML is a 12-team, NL-only, traditional 4x4 rotisserie league that started with three teams in 1988. After considerable hunting, I found that BML stands for "Baseball Mail League," though I couldn’t find an explanation of that name on the site. For the most part, the league is referred to simply as BML.

This is really a site that needs to be experienced rather than described, so I’ll just hit some highlights here :

The main page is chock-full of information – the current standings, league leaders, and current league news such as trades and player/pitcher of the period awards. This information is available for every season going back to 1998 in the New Archives section.

An extensive History section, including year-by-year standings.

A Clubhouse section, featuring individual pages for each team that include team logos and histories, plus owner profiles.

An Owner’s Box page that provides news and notes about owners in the league (be sure to check out the pictures from the Dave & Busters outing).

Two outstanding, outstanding newsletters:

The BML Enquirer, a sarcastic, at times caustic, but always witty monthly. You old-timers remember the old CFCL newsletters in which Rich mercilessly persecuted the Bald Eagles and their owner Bob Monroe? The Enquirer is often reminiscent of those classic pieces. Though I don’t recall Rich every using the quality of illustration that accompanies the "Out of It on Mother’s Day" feature.

The BML Beat, also a monthly, is more light-hearted than the Enquirer, but is no less humorous and entertaining. Excellent, excellent use of pictures (see the February 5, 2003 issue in the archives). Also be sure to check out the celebrity interviews with Samuel L. Jackson (April 9), Donald Rumsfeld and Mohammed Saeed-al-Sahaf (April 30), and Austin Powers (June 4). Very clever stuff. The Jackson interview is outstanding (though it helps quite a bit if you’re familiar with Jackson’s performance as Jules in "Pulp Fiction").

It’s amazing how consistently good these newsletters are. The archives of each include issues going back over 10 years, when they were put out on good, old-fashioned paper.
