Proud Moment

My middle son Matthew (pictured above) had his first-ever tee-ball game this past week. It was a hard-fought, three-inning contest that ended (like all tee-ball games) in a 39-39 tie. Matthew played 3B, 1B, and CF; hit clean-up in the 1st and 3rd innings and 10th in the 2nd inning (all 13 kids on the team bat in every inning, with the batting order reversed every other frame); reached base every time up; scored three runs and drove in a handful. It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but it was perfect nonetheless.

Proud Moment #2 will come next week, when my oldest son, Andrew, will play in his first Little League game (he’s skipping tee-ball and going straight to the coach-pitched Instructional League). This one will be extra special because last week he found out what his team name would be – the Cubs.

Suspensions

A question was raised recently about how to handle suspensions of NL players when it comes to mid-week transactions. Can a player who is suspended by the NL be reserved in a mid-week move? If so, when can that move be made? When the suspension is announced? When the player actually begins serving the suspension?

Obviously, this is very tricky. Suspensions aren’t definitive MLB transactions like placing a player on the DL or sending player to the minors. A player might be suspended but with appeals, etc., he might not actually begin serving his time for a week or longer.

The Executive Committee is discussing how to interpret the mid-week transactions rules in relation to suspensions, and the current thinking seems to be that a suspended player CAN be reserved in a mid-week transaction, but the move cannot be made until the player actually begins serving his suspension. That means that the announcement that a player has been suspended is not enough to qualify for a mid-week move – the player cannot be reserved until he actually starts missing games.

The EC is still kicking around some thoughts on the topic, so if you have anything you’d like to contribute feel free to share it in an e-mail to [email protected] or a post on the Message Board.

Hall of Fame

In a couple reports last winter, I mentioned a traveling exhibit from the Baseball Hall of Fame that’s currently residing at the Field Museum. The exhibit is scheduled to be around until late July, and I’m definitely planning on going at least once between now and the time it closes.

If anyone is interested in going as a group, let me know and we can try to coordinate schedules.

There are a couple special events coming up that may be of particular interest:

Tour of Wrigley Field ($45 per person). May 17 – 9AM-2PM

Tour of Comiskey Park ($45 per person) May 31 – 9AM-2PM

Evening with Bob Costas ($18 per person) June 30 – 7PM

The ballpark tours include a trolley ride from the Museum and the ballpark (and back), full tour of the park (including the playing field – you’re encouraged to bring your mitt and ball), a souvenir, and admission to the exhibit after returning to the Museum. Both events require pre-registration.

The Costas event features a lecture by Costas. While it’s not mentioned, I assume you also get into the exhibit.

Here’s a link to the exhibit’s web page (which features an embarrassingly simple Chicago baseball trivia quiz):

Report Downloads

Last weekend, I sent out an e-mail about the weekly Word and Excel reports that appear in the Download Center. I had been having trouble uploading the reports to the Geocities-hosted web server and figured it was a problem with my Internet connection from home. After doing some digging, I discovered that the problem was on Geocities’ side. It appears that their upload tool can no longer process files in Word and Excel format. Unfortunately, since Geocities is a free service, it also appears that this is unlikely to be fixed anytime soon.

The good news is that I can still upload the ZIP file that includes all three of the weekly reports (Standings, Roster Changes, and Rosters), so that will still be available.  Remember, though, that the updated ZIP file won’t be available until mid-Saturday morning because I won’t get the Standings report from TQS until Friday’s results have been tabulated.

I don’t know how big an issue this really is, because I don’t know if anyone ever downloaded the reports each week to begin with. For those of you who DID download the reports, will the ZIP file be sufficient? If not, let me know, as there are a couple other alternatives I can look into. At a minimum, I can e-mail the reports each week to whoever wants them. Drop me a note and let me know what works best.
