A Covenants is the political faction each of the Sires and Childe belong to. Some Kindred choose not to allign to a particular faction or may switch allegiances depending on the power struggles within Kindred society.
Though it is typical for a Childe to follow the Covenant of their Sire, none too few have joined others out of spite or true belief in their choice Covenant's cause.
In past times, three main groups emerged in reaction to the Inquisition in Europe. These groups were the Camarilla, the Sabbat. and the Inconnu.
Today, there are 5 main Covenants in Kindred society but, like most societies, there are extreme and subversive groups which exist outwith the main spectrum of power. Although these covenants exist in their own right, many elder kindred who support a modern covenant still feel a private alignment to either Camarilla or Sabbat fellowships. |
