PLATFORMS:
Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000/XP

DESCRIPTION:
The Windows registry is the repository for virtually every setting on your system. Many of these settings can be accessed through Control Panel applets or other utilities. But others only can be changed by directly editing the registry, and this can be dangerous. If you make a mistake in applying a tweak, you can cause problems instead of solving them. And unless you remembered to back up the branch of the Registry that you're editing, you may not be able to undo the tweak.

RegistryRobot provides a safe interface to dozens of registry settings that cannot be changed through built-in Windows utilities. Only tweaks that relate to your operating system or Internet Explorer version are displayed; if it's not relevant, you never see it. The tweaks appear in a tree structure, organized by category, and include descriptive text so you know what the effect of each one will be. And if you don't like the result of a tweak, you can easily undo it.

Many of the tweaks in RegistryRobot's database come from PC Magazine's "User to User" column, which publishes numerous tips for improving system performance or correcting problems. Some fix problems like "scrambled desktop icons", while others allow customizations like removing default items from your desktop or Start menu. Because of the danger in editing the Registry, some readers don't take advantage of "User to User" suggestions that involve tweaking the Registry. RegistryRobot makes it safe.
