AUTHOR
This sonnet sequence was written by Çetin Sert when he was 16, studying English at Edirne High School.
His interest in the language studies dates back to 1994 -- the year when he got introduced to the computers. At that time, he only needed pure vocabulary with no grammar knowledge. The reason was computer games. Disproving his parent's suppositions, he showed how useful computer games; therefore the computer itself, could get. "After quite a while with computers" he says, "I never really needed a dictionary. The missing parts of the dictionary in my mind were being written by my mind itself. I always tried to find the meanings without help. This helped me much. Now I have no boundaries to any word in my treasure. Never be addicted to dictionaries! Overuse of one can put you into real trouble with language studies. Instead, respect the power of your mind."
In 1998, he entered Edirne High School and took intensive English lessons for one year. Supporting his learnings at school, he kept playing computer games and programming. "My teachers were never late at understanding my potential. Understanding doesn't prove anything, though. It is helping that counts." he says, "And luckily I am given both understanding and help."
The year 2000 brought a complete difference to his interests. With the help of the internet he improved his English and it was the internet again which made him begin writing English poems. "I" he says, "owe what they call talent to someone I met on the net." He wrote about six poems of his own for that so-called online friend. Then, furthering his interest in English poetry, he began reading Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe. Soon after, in no contrast to what someone reading Shakespeare would do, he adopted the sonnet form.
Just a few weeks ago, his efforts began to bear fruit. After writing a couple of sonnets, he entered one of them to an international poetry contest held by poetry.com. To his surprise, his entry was selected for publication in an anthology book called The Silence Within which is to be printed in June 2001. To go on with the poetry, he is now writing whenever he feels he has the right matter to write about. Abstracts from one of his recent articles;
"My belief in my self is what I care. Those living in an ageless tale do not interest me much, nor do what they say. They are living in a told tale. I am writing mine. It's all that simple."
"Why to any deity shall I turn ? I have my sweet self and it is nearer than anything my afraid mind can create."
"I am not being tested by the creator. I am being tested by the creation and what I will leave behind will be tested by Time."
According to what he says, he will attend a respected university for a degree in the English language and will then go on with the medieval English, Latin and Greek languages. Among his major interests, are publishing a book and writing plays.
As requested, his words about poetry and writing are written below finishing this part.
"I have two simple reasons for writing. First, I am living this life to be remembered, not to be forgotten. Second, there is so much beauty on this planet alone that it writes down to my book the duty of praise... being a most correct mirror to that which is false and to that which is true. These are possible only through letting my mind ride the wild waters of a night-coloured river, which they now prefer to call 'ink'."
