| According to two new articles, the world is getting so hot that some plants and animals are changing their lifestyle. Many scientists agree that the Earth's temperature is going up, but they do not know what the effect will be. This rise in temperature is called global warming. Researchers studied thousands of species and found that many of them, from starfish to butterflies to all kinds of flowers, moved as far as 60 miles to cooler climates. Some birds and amphibians, or animals that live partly on land and partly in the sea, like frogs, now lay eggs sooner. Some flowers bloom earlier. The authors of the two articles, which were published in the science journal Nature, estimate that more than half of the species they studied will change their habitat, or home, or behavior because of global warning. "If we're already seeing such dramatic changes, it's really pretty frightening to think what we might see in the next 100 years," said Terry Root of Stanford University, an author of one of the studies. In the past 18,000 years, the world's temperature has risen by between 5 and 9 degrees. But in the past 100 years alone, it has gone up about 1 degree. Scientists and world leaders agree that this is a serious problem, and are working on ways to keep the world cool. |

| War is a horrible thing. Violence is a horrible thing. PEACE ROCKS. Which is why the Department of Peace (DOP) is trying to convince Congress to pass an Act that will create a group of people who will try their best to solve world conflicts peacefully. However, Congress needs more convincing. They would like ordinary citizens (like you, reading this right now) to write to your Congressman (either by mail or e-mail, but regular mail is more convincing if ya get my jift) and state your opinion, and try to convince them to pass the Act, or at least attempt to. This is extremely important! If our Earth stops thinking about peace then the whole world will be destroyed by violence and conflict and war, either physically, or spiritually, or both! Please do your part and help the DOP! |
