Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning
Governor
Gray Davis signed landmark legislation creating a new state holiday, the
Cesar E. Chavez Day of Service and learning, in honor of Cesar Chavez.
GO SERV awards nearly $5 million in grants annually to programs that involve
K-12 students in on-going service activities designed to help them learn
about the life of this great civil rights leader and practice the values
that propelled his work. Activities include creating community gardens,
initiating neighborhood beautification projects, creating, after-school
service club, and gleaning vegetables and fruit from fields for food banks
and homeless shelters.
