WINDOWS 2000

File Systems Essentials

Windows 2000 has support for numerous file systems, the two primary ones being NTFS (NT File System) and FAT32. Legacy support for FAT is also included.

With Windows 2000, a new version of NTFS (dubbed NTFS 5.0) is being released. Changes were required to support the new Dynamic Disk features.

Below is a list of what file systems are supported by Windows 2000:

FAT: Windows 2000 continues to support legacy FAT volumes. Microsoft has stated that FAT is in a maintenance mode, where new enhancements will no longer be made.

FAT32: Full support in Windows 2000. This is the file system to use for systems that are dual-booting with Windows 98, as both operating systems can use this file system. Windows 2000 allows FAT32 volumes of up to 32GB in size to be used. Larger volumes can be used, but only if they were created under Windows 98 or other tools.

NTFS: Full support, allows volumes of up to 16 Terabytes. Windows 2000 will automatically upgrade any NTFS volumes to NTFS 5.0. Those 5.0 volumes can only be read by Windows 2000 or by NT 4.0 with SP4 or later. WARNING: Although it can read/write those NTFS 5.0 volumes, NT4/SP4+ does NOT include an updated chkdisk program to correct disk corruption on such volumes!

CDFS: The CD File System. This is supported in Windows 2000, but is quickly being supplanted by the new UDF format.

UDF: Universal Disk Format - a newer file system used for optical disks such as newer CD-ROMs, DVD, etc.
