Ok, I got this story from the different sites and from my Ruruoni Kenshin OVA VCD's. I just summarized it up. The intro of the RK OVA is pretty dark and filled with bloody battles. This starts here......
A group of people were travelling on the road when suddenly a group of bandits ambushed them. Kenshin, who was known as Shinta then, was still a young boy. Both his parents died when he was still young. The bandits killed all of them except for Shinta because he was protected by three young ladies (Akane, Sakura, Kasumi) who were killed. The one who actually saved Shinta was Hiko Seijuro. He killed all the bandits and told Shinta to go to the nearest village and ask for help.
The next day, Hiko went to the village to check out if Shinta did show up but he didn't. He went back to the place were the bloody killings happened last night and found out that Shinta buried all those who died during the ambush. Hiko took Shinta and named him Kenshin ( "ken" for sword and "shin" for heart ) because he thought that the name Shinta is too sweet for a swordsman.
After long years of sword training, Kenshin decided to join the Bakumatsu but Hiko didn't allow him but somehow Kenshin did join by disobeying his master. As he joined the group, he became known as Hitokiri Batousai ( shadow assassin ). He killed many people and he met Tomoe when............
Kenshin murdered a young man named Kiyosato who was a member of the Shogunate party. He was not really a good fighter because as you can see, he was killed easily but he was able to give Kenshin a slash on his left cheek which is his half-cross scar. This scar would not stop bleeding and to the older women where Kenshin stays, this scar means something bad or a cursed one because it keeps on bleeding and would not heal.
Time passed when Kenshin met Tomoe who was drinking sake and I think she was planning to commit suicide since she has a small knife hidden beneath her kimono. Kenshin stops some drunken men who were harassing her and left the restaurant after that. On his way home, he met a Shogunate assassin who tries to kill Kenshin and Kenshin manages to kill the assassin of course. Tomoe saw all this because she followed Kenshin to thank him for saving her. She then realizes that Kenshin is the one who causes the bloodshed around there. It was raining then, Tomoe's drunk and she fainted. Kenshin brings her to his place and she ends up staying there.
When Tomoe stayed there, most of Kenshin's companions kept making fun of them and Kenshin gets really pissed off. Many things happened then and Kogoro who was Kenshin's master told him to leave and go to the countryside and hide there where it will be more peaceful. Kogoro asked Tomoe to take care of Kenshin and that they should be married since it would be suspicious if a single male goes by itself. A young married couple would not look so suspicious. So the two got married. Kenshin was only 15 then. Tomoe was 18. Tomoe's 3 years older than Kenshin.
Five months after their marriage, Batousai realizes that he's happy being with Tomoe. All I know is that both became in love with each other (blame my 3rd OVA VCD, it's damaged and I can't watch it). There was a traitor in the Ishinshi side who knows where Hitokiri Batousai is. They sent Enishi, Tomoe's younger brother, out to them. Kenshin leaves both of them to talk privately. Enishi told Tomoe that he came to here to save Tomoe from Kenshin. Tomoe told him to stay out of this dangerous business and go home. Enishi, being young and innocent, didn't understand why her sister seems to defend Batousai. Enishi got mad and runs off. Kenshin returns and Tomoe told him something about her past. About her fiance who died and blamed herself for that because he wasn't able to stop him from leaving Edo. She didn't reveal who he is anyway and Batousai told her something about his past too. Why he killed people and left his master. He told her that he will protect Tomoe no matter what. That's the first time you see Tomoe smile and blush.
The next morning, after writing her diary, she leaves the house while Batousai was still sleeping. Tomoe believed that although Batousai killed many people, he also protected the ones he loved and she would not allow him to die. Farewell to her second beloved.
She went to the Shogunate spies who she was working for and tries to kill the leader to protect Kenshin. She was knocked down unconcious though. After that, the spies sent Enishi to get Batousai saying that he must fight them if he wants to see Tomoe alive. He went up there to confront them and during the last fight, due to loss of lots of blood, he was became weak and he's sense of sight was lost.
After regaining her conciousness, Tomoe went out to see Batousai fighting for her. She doesn't want him to die. Tomoe went in between the two people who were fighting. Batousai slashes Tomoe instead of the enemy but when he realized that he was slashing her, it was too late. The small knife flies off and gives Kenshin his second scar which becomes the X scar. Tomoe dies and Kenshin gives out a cry. Enishi stands beside the bushes and saw her dead sister and wept silently.
I just got this ending from another page according to my OVA, Kenshin puts Tomoe on his lap, then Tomoe raises the small knife and gives Kenshin the second slash for his scar. Here are some of the pics.
