Legend of the Twelve Animals

According to the legend, the Jade Emperor of Heaven wanted to use twelve different animals as the symbols of the twelve Earthly Branches. The animals will take their place judging upon their individual abilities in a running competition.

The selected animals were excited in the coming competition. The ox and the rat were the first to appear.

The rat proposed to the ox, "Between the two of us, why not the one who is thought to be bigger win the first place?"

Upon hearing this, the ox thought it fair and agreed to it. But as they walked along the street, the rat jumped onto the ox's back. When the people saw this, they exclaimed in surprise, "What a big rat!"

So this is how the rat won the first place and the ox the second.

Soon the dragon and the tiger came to compete for the third position. They were running with all their strength when a hare rushed up and got in the dragon's way. Hence, the tiger got the third position and the hare the fourth.

As the dragon caught up, a snake came. To obtain the fifth position, the dragon told the snake off. "You have no horns on your head nor have you any legs. So how can you compete with me?"

Hearing this, the snake felt ashamed and took the sixth place and the dragon got the fifth.

The horse soon came running and got the seventh place.

Soon afterwards, the monkey and the goat came. The latter was appraised to be in the eighth and the monkey got the ninth.

After the monkey and the goat, the rooster and the dog arrived together. The rooster said to the dog that since it was in-charged of the morning and the dog kept watch the night, it should be placed before it. Hence in this way, the rooster was placed tenth and the dog the eleventh.

Finally, the lazy pig who had overslept came walking and was placed the last.

At the end of the competition, the Jade Emperor declared the results and the twelve animals were decreed to represent the twelve Earthly Branches respectively.
