THE FOOD PAGE: MY FAVOURITE FOODS
My favourite food is eggs. Fried, boiled or omelette, I love them and if
not for the cholesterol I would eat eggs every day.
Avgolemono is a Greek white, rich soup made of chicken broth, eggs, lemon and rice. It is delicious!!
Dolmades is a Turkish recipe adopted in Greece. Minced beef, herbs and rice are wrapped in vine leaves and are steamed in a pot. I love them.
Horta in Greek literally translates to "grass". However, this is not any kind of grass. Particular varieties of wild greens are boiled and served with salt, lemon and olive oil making a brilliant combination.
Being Greek I eat lots of fish. I thoroughly enjoy fish but my taste is very specific. I prefer large fish such as swordfish pictured on the right but do not like salmon or tuna. Fagri, galeos, barbouni, tsipoura, melanouri are some of my favourite fish. I do not eat fishfood such as crustaceans or shells.
Some people describe themselves as vegetarians. Well, I describe myself as a carnivore. Lamb is my favourite meat, but I also love pork, beef, chicken and turkey. Lamb on the spit is my favourite way of cooking meat, but I also like it roast, boiled or grilled. I also enjoy sausages, bacon, ham and other meat products. It is questionable whether I can survive without meat for over three days.
Souvlakia (or kebabs) is another Turkish recipe that is very famous throughout the world. It is the Greek equivalent of fast food served with  bread and possibly salad.
Keftedes are Greek meatballs made with beef, bread and herbs. Another of the few good things the Turks left to Greece before we got rid of them.
I first had paella in Mardid in 2001 and since then I regard it as one of my favourite dishes.
Chinese and Indian food ranks amongst my favourite and I try to eat one Indian and one Chinese dish at least once a week. Chicken curry especially.
Feta cheese is my favourite cheese especially when eaten with olive oli, bread and perhaps Kalamata olives.
I have a real soft spot for ice creams and chocolate. Fortunately I need not worry about getting fat since I only weigh 65kg which for a guy like me who is 182cm tall is almost underweight.
As you might have noticed I am not very fond of vegetables and my diet does not seem very healthy consisting of meat and sweets! However, I do compensate with fruits. I love fruits especially water melons and apricots. Fortunately, Greece is a paradise for fruit lovers as is most of the Mediterranean. I try to eat lots of fruit every day, especially grapes, orange juice and clementines which I consume in enormous quatities.
I am by no means tea-total, but as far as I am concerned water is the best drink. Athenian water has better taste than that of London, even though I like Scottish water very much as well. Greece has lots of mountains producing all sorts of mineral waters.

I also like lemonade, and from wines I prefer white wines such as Chardonnay. From beers I prefer Becks and Lowenbrau but nothing compares to the beer I drank in
Munich in 2000. It was amber in a glass!

Anyway, from all alcoholic drinks my favourite is Guiness and I always drink it on special occasions or when out with friends.
