Nature and Objective

The Centre of Atomic Molecular Physics and Quantum Optics (CEPAMOQ) is a proposed African Centre of Excellence created in the University of Douala. Its birth was the result of the common will of the President of the Republic of Cameroon, the High Commissioner of the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA, France) and the Director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (ICTP, Italy) to contribute to the development of Physics in Africa in general and in French-speaking Africa in particular. And agreement was thus signed between the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP), the CEA and the ICTP. The objective of CEPAMOQ are as follows:

The training of young scientists to/through research and teaching leading to a doctorate in the domains of Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics and Quantum Optics.

The promotion of modern applications of optics in agriculture, industry, biology, medicine, telecommunications, fundamental physics and spectroscopy. CEPAMOQ intends to better exploit such applications so as to bring solutions to developmental problems in Africa. CEPAMOQ hope to overcome this challenge through direct collaboration with Laser Centres of African Network, LAM (Laser Atomic and Molecular & Optical Sciences).

The promotion of fruitful contacts and scientific co-operation among african researchers in the domain of microphysics, through exchange programmes, South-South research and scientific meetings. Through this, CEPAMOQ in favour of solidarity among scientific poles, also wishes to be a model place for exchanges and scientific meetings in Africa.

The co-operation with national and international organisations that support the development of scientific activities in the African continent. The Centre wishes to be a reference partner of these organisations.

In line with these primary missions, CEPAMOQ intends (in Secondary Education) to encourage young students, especially young girls, in the study of sciences, organize the refresher courses for teachers and the production of physics textbooks.
