Cleaning:

A simple step which is easy to overlook but can be disasterous for many components of your bike. This should be done after every ride. To remove mud use a stiff bristled brush along with a smaller one (toothbrushes are good) for hard-to-reach places like derailleurs and around the brake pads. Then using a cloth and warm soapy water rub all the dirt off the bike and finish by hand drying with a soft cloth. Do not use a hose because the water will get into the bearings and could destroy them completely. Check out the general information page for more info.

Adjustments:

Rocketing down a fast straightway inevitably causes bolts to work themselves loose Your job is to find that out at home - not while flying down a trail. It takes just a few minutes for a quick inspection but it could save you some major problems later.

SADDLE - Check saddle position and see that it is tightly secured. It should be adjusted so that the heel of the foot is can reach the pedal at full extension when the pedal is in the lowest position. Adjust the fore/aft position using the allen bolt under the saddle.

HEADSET - Check that the headset is tight-hold the front brakes and rock the bike foreward and back a few times while looking for motion.

BRAKES: Check the pad and make sure that the brake levers have enough tension to apply the pads, otherwise you won't be stopping.

CRANKS: Check the cranks for play by applying side-to-side pressure. If there is any movement, get your BB tightened immediately.
