if you want to work in the armed forces

All sort of skills can be very useful when you want to work in
the army. Physical fitness and reliability for example are essential for most of the jobs offered within the army. You most also be able to work in a team, to take responsability, to follow orders and to be ready for long separations from your family.

Good communication skills are needed and it is good to have an interest in science and technology.
Communication technicians in the
naval service for example need to be able to speak in a foreign language.

Languages are also an important part of the Corps' activities, which is responsible for providing combat intelligence and  protective security to counter espionage, subversion and sabotage.

If you are a
soldier, you may have to go to another country and you will also meet people who don't speak your language. Speaking another language, even not fluently, will help you in your job and to receive more responsability.

Even if you become a
police officer or a detective, languages can be a very useful tool because although you don't have to go abroad, you may have to speak to foreigners who are within the UK.  Continental people driving on the wrong side of the road won't have any excuse if you tell them off in their own language and foreign drug dealers won't run very far !
