Dear Parents:
This summer all Stoneham Elementary Schools are encouraging our students in grades 1-5 to participate in the reading program "A Star Spangled Summer" at the Stoneham Public Library.  This reading program is part of the Statewide 2002 Summer Reading Program and involves students in reading incentive contracts.

The summer reading list is provided by the school department to help students select reading material appropriate for their grade level, and align reading to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.  Students will choose reading materials from the suggested summer list as they track their reading time for the library program.  The summer reading lists will also be available in the library for students.

When students return to school in September their participation in this program will be acknowledged with a "Celebration of Literacy Day".  The certificates students received from the library will be posted and acknowledged in each elementary school.

We urge parents to promote summer reading and writing activities.  Children may choose to write a journal about the books they read and share this with their classmates in September, or create a story map about a vacation to save as a memento, or send cards and notes to friends and relatives, or read a road map on a family trip.  The literacy activities your child engages in this summer will generate advancements in reading for September.

Thank you for your support and have a great summer!
