CI Bakery.....
Jerry Bierman....well, would you believe I was just talking about your Dad the other day...my sister and I were remembering the days of Yore when we used to leave very early in the morning to go to Vermont, and your Dad would open the doors to the bakery at 4:30am, and have an order of fresh baked bread, rolls, and of course his famous crumb cake ready for us...Only bad thing was... we had to smell that wonderful aroma for over an hour before we stopped for breakfast...Good to see your name...... e mail is [email protected] (grandkids call me that).. take care

Jill,
Are you talking about the bakery in the Woolworth Shopping Center? If so, I have such fond memories of the bakery myself. Every Sunday morning having fresh pastries (cheese packets where my favorite). Their Coffee Crumb Cake was pretty good too. Steve

When I just read your reply and saw, "Robin's Point". It was a total recall of my Dad and I having a beer(root beer). Sitting at the bar ordering up a frosty one. That was one of the great memories I have of me and my Dad. What a rush...wooooh!!

I just had to respond, I live by the hills too, on the Farmingville side. When we first moved here I was always nervous, they took the fun out that big one, but you can still see the water if you go slow at the top. Anyway, as far as the hill off of Lowell, ther was one that connected Nicholls and Connetquot that I remember because my brothers sent me down in a homemade go cart with no brakes. Fun fun! Judy

I can't place you but we MUST know each other ---I lived on Hilliard and Pineville until I was about 7, then my parents separated and I lived with a family at the other end of Hilliard (by Hawthorne). When I was about 12 until I was 16, I lived with the Bullerwells, who lived on Storey and Pineville, but their # was 50. What corner were you on? I also remember Joey (and Danny) Fawcett, but can't remember who was older. LOVED the sweet shoppe--it was a teacher who owned it. His first name was Mel, but I can't remember his last name. I went to elementary at St John of God, so I knew him as Mel for so long before I went to CI High. I'll have to ask Eva if she remembers you. Anyway, tell your parents I said hi--I remember you as a "little girl". Since I graduated 1n 1967, I guess I'm about 8 years older. Did you have an older brother or sister or am I thinking wrong? A&P??? Butcher shop?? the only butcher shop I remember was the meat farms off of suffolk ave - just before you hit carlton ave... if the A&P was there it turned into a bingo hall and now I believe is a dollar store - if it was on Carlton ave by where Woolworths used to be - it is now C-Town and has been C-town for as long as I can remember. The old library? was that by where the old movie theater was on Carlton? The movie theater turned into the salvation army - but now I believe they knocked that building down and its the parking lot for the new firehouse. If the church you remember was St. John of God's that is still there - has been a bunch of different colors but its still there. The "new" library is nice. (not so new anymore) Its off of Hawthorne ave... I used to love going there after school (that was the only place my mom would let me go after junior high)... Did you graduate from the high school or Reed (which is now the jr high).... I gave Carolanne your e-mail address she says Diane lives in NC most of the year except for the summer they have a place upstate. and she has a computer in both spots so she will pass it along.... I told her to get her to come online here she would be surprised at how many people she probably knows. Take care. Christine

Hi, okay my girlfriend and I are trying to figure this all out - I was wrong on my previous e-mail to you - the name of the butcher shop I remember was not meat farms it was T&J meats - (I called my mom) - that I believe now is a compare foods supermarket - the old A&P was in the same shopping center - it is now a family dollar store Where was sugar bowl hill???? We have no clue never even heard of it??? - Jack in the box we remember - was on the corner of Suffolk and Carlton ave... that is nothing now - the old train station is not a station any longer - the new station is down on Suffolk and Lowell (they needed more parking and updating for an electric rail vs. diesel) The new station is right in front of O'neil elementary school - was that the hill you are talking about??? Where was this Busy Bee??? My mom never even heard of that.. We moved to CI in I guess it was 69 so they might have been gone from then.. Do you have pictures??? We'd love to see some --- You'd be surprised at how CI has changed - my friend Margo still lives in CI - Do you remember CI State??? Well that is now closed - they have built a new federal court building and state building on one site - then we also have the home of the Long Island Ducks - their statium is across the street from the court houses (it is very nice looking and close) NY Tech is on part of the property also - Then Gullhaven golf course is still there - and they've built Park Row which is a nice townhouse community. across the street from CI State they now have an industrial park its about 10 companies so far, they are building a multiplex, a new king kullen and a few other stores I am sure. The old Carlton Park is now a nice area - it is College Woods - they redid the whole area - and built new houses - they also gave people cheap loans to fix up their houses if they did not want to move.... So there have been some changes for a positive in CI... But there have been a lot of changes in the negative as well... But then again where aren't there changes for the worse...

The Busy Bee Deli was between Wheeler Rd. Elementary and the old Methodist Church on the west side of the street. I bought many BB Bats and Mary Janes there. But the old man who owned the place, would never give a discount on a full box of baseball cards. The deli on Suffolk at the corner gave the best baseball card deals. I think a girl in my class, father owned that deli. Steve

the school is still there - its Alfano school - it was closed for awhile but within the past 5 years reopened - the methodist church I believe is still standing however, it is closed, but that shop is no longer there it is now a driveway into conventry village an apt complex... and its been that for as long as I can remember - Was McGowen field built when you were a kid?????? Thats not there anymore either...

OMG, where is my town????Okay...The a 7 p used to be in a little shopping center oh suffok and Church street.....same as the butcher shop...Never saw woolworths...was always just the five & dime store...Had many a date at the old movie theater..I know they don't have one any more...St. John of God on wheeler....the Library used to be directly across from the school.....before it was the Library..it used to be grocery store...that was back around l945...ouch...am really really old...it's been almost 20 yrs since I've been back....maybe I don't want to...The last time I was there, the "old" Catholic cemetery had grown and changed...eons ago that area was Zorn's farm...can you believe it...I also somewhere in my files have a picture of me, at about age 2 standing on a dirt road, tree lined, and today it is Halley Lane...when I find it I'll send it to you.....thanks a bunch..for the memories

Just printed out this page..where to start....some of your questions may have been answered, but here goes...Sugar bowl Hill...It was directly across the intersection or crossroad of Islip Avenue and Wheeler Road...There was a root beer stand at this corner...When last there, off of Islip Ave. there was a mini mall...behind that was the great sleigh riding hill ever...Ask the principal of the Jr High, Jack Cassidy about a 1960 March snow storm, and sleigh riding there...CI has had three train stations. One right on wheeler and suffolk, then that was moved further down suffolk...The busy bee was right next to the old old Wheeler Road school....I went to that school from Kindergarten to the middle of my Freshman year, when we moved to New High school on Half Mile road........And do I ever remember CI state...Dr. O'neill was head Dr, and he initiated lst open door policy on weekends for some inmates...the ladies especially came to town every sunday, dressed in the most outlandish outfits, but happy and smiling all the time. I can't believe all the changes made to that area...Is Robins Hall still there..we used to use that for Girl Scout Rallies....and also lots of plays...That's wonderful about Carlton Park....I'm glad it's been fixed up.....Is the old fire house still there...across from what was the movies...I will go through my archives and see what pics I can come up with...If you want to e mail me, use [email protected] and I will send you what I have......

I know where you are talking about now - wow how things have changed - St. John of God used to be on Wheeler??? in the old white church?? I thought that was the methodist church but that is across the street- I guess where your library used to be.... St John of God is now down the road on Carlton ave (cross suffolk ave) before the fire house.. The cemetary has grown (unfortunately)... I know quite a few people who are buried there (again unfortunately)... I can't beleive that used to be a farm.. I know when I used to cut our of high school there was a field on the next block over from the h.s. (next to the football field) that we used to hang out in and smoke etc... that is gone now maybe that was what was left on Zorn's farm.... You should go back to see all the changes - You probably wouldn't recognize much - except the spaces that buildings or houses now occupy.... The main town now I look at sometimes as I drive to my friends house and I get sad with how much it has deteriorated... But then I look at the new things (courts, baseball fields etc) and say maybe CI still has a chance...We can cross our fingers.....

oops, sorry..been a while, forgetting wheeler road changed to Carleton Ave when it crossed rr tracks...Methodist Church was wheeler road..little tiny white church, on same side of road as old school...busy bee used to be between church and school...Catholic Church and school on Carleton Avenue...boy it's easy to forget....Okay here's another building...Up from where the OLD fire house used to be was a liquor store...called Shoemakers..I went to school with daughter of owner...she is still on LI...Smithtown...sorry about the mix up.....gotta run....dirty house calling......thanks again

Sugar Bowl hill I still can not picture - Wheeler and Islip ave only meet by the expressway - but that is considered Hauppauge??? is that where you used to Sleigh ride??? - I can't picture a mini-mall the only thing close would be the king kullen but that is across the street from the cemetary and goes down to motor pkwy. My girlfriends son goes to JR. High I am printing out your last e-mail and giving it to her to show Mr. Cassidy... maybe he can get some of the older teachers (who have been around awhile) to come online here... It would be nice to speak with some of them... The old fire house is still standing - they built a new one a few years back I believe the ambulance is now in the old fire house. I would love to see whatever pictures or memories you have.. I find this so interesting... and I could listen for hours. (as you can tell)... Robins hall is still standing but it hasn't been used in years and years.... I've never seen anything there. I figured once they built the college they would use it but as far as I could tell they haven't. They did use all of the old buildings and converted them into classrooms, dorms, library's etc... which was nice to see. My friend says she thinks they might be renovating that for the college slowly.. It would be nice to see all of the buildings used... I will e-mail you shortly with my address I would love to show everyone I know from CI your pictures, they would also love them... As far as that liquor store goes - I do not remember it - was it coming towards the train tracks or towards CI State, Was Village Bridal and Tuxedo shops there when you were young - They were located just over the train tracks headed toward the fire dept - on the left hand side was village Tuxedo and bridal - (bridal later moved across the st) - Or maloney or walsh funeral homes??? There was a beer distributor on Carlton ave. it was on the left going towards CI State. My friend does not remember that I just do because we used to stop there on the way home with my dad to pick up beer.. (for him of course)...

The liquor store used to be about 1/2 block or so from the entrance to CI state...I have some major cleaning to do, and hopefully will be able to find some pics for you....will be glad to send them...As for Sugar bowl Hill, it was directly across the street from old part of Catholic Cemetery...I know the LIE cut through a majority of it..but things have changed so much, I probably wouldn't recognize it...I used to ride my bike from my house to half mile rd, tomotor parkway, up to wheeler and home...it was nothing but trees, and never any traffic..aaahh well...progress

I think I know where you are talking about now - there is no more hill anymore.... just houses ..... but that is weird..... Where do you live now??? My friends father has a book on CI History - or Long Island she is going to e-mail him to see which it is - if its CI and there are current pictures I will scan and send some to you.. If I get a whim on maybe I will grab my camera and take some for you to see some of the old places and what they look like now, so you would have an idea.... I will let you know either way.. Christine.

Thanks Christine...If you are anywhere the corner of Oakdale Avenue, and Pineville Road..that is the house I grew up in.....When I find all these wonderful pictures I will show you what the house looked like in 1947 when we moved there. Catty Corner from my house is the house of Jack Meade and his wife. Jack was the Band director and music teacher when I started grade school. I hear from him at Christmas...My mom passed on last December, and I have hundreds of boxes yet to go through..so it may be awhile before I find all the pics...I'm sure if you want to hear some history of Central Islip and the school Mr. Meade would be glad to be interviewed......Thanks again........

Did you know her??? When I get back from vacation I will go around CI with my camera and take some shots of your old house -what # was it or do you want pictures of all 4?? - Kevin (guy I work with) said he remembers the A&P and he also remembers a carvel on suffolk ave and a men's shop?? he said his father owned a bar on Suffolk ave on the south side I guess between lowell ave and carlton - his last name is Hayes... Sorry to hear about your mother.. I would love to send a letter or e-mail to Mr. Meade - I would be interested in hearing all he has to say... Someday it might just come in handy - for reunions etc when people aren't around any longer who remember...... Thanks Christine

HEy Christine....That would be a great idea. If we could get people to contribute pictures or stories about CI I think it would interest a lot of people who don't know the CI we grew up in or even the CI that the older graduates grew up in. My dad has the CI history book too and I read it. It was really weird to see the pictures of Wheeler Road and Carlton Ave especially before the 1950's.....Some of the names we went to school with had deep roots in CI. My mom used to bring my little sis & i there like once a month for our ritual and torturous PIXIE cut, i still have nightmares. It has been a blast recalling all this.I hope i can dig up all my pics.Hope we can also post them.Let me know about house number for John.Thanks. Steve:
All the bars in CI had their characters. Muller's (next to the old movie theater/Salvation Army) had more than its share, though. I first went there when I was 15 and Helen Johnson tended bar (ID? We don't need no steenking ID!!!) - I had a running tab there by the time I was 16. The first time I went in there, I noticed that one of the latrines was cracked right in half. Five years later, I stopped noticing. One time, when I was about 17, I came out of the bathroom and before I could even get back to the pool table, this girl runs up and slaps me in the face, cursing me out for peeking at her while she was peeing. "Wait a minute - I didn't even know I could peek into the women's restroom!", I said. So I brought her right into the men's room, where Steve Hardy was hiding in a stall, and made him admit to it. Apparently, he was one of the few who knew about the peephole. (I don't think they ever fixed that, either).
There was this one guy, Stretch, who would've been really tall - probably 6'6" - if only he could pick his chin up off of his chest. He had broken his neck years earlier falling backwards off of a bar stool. Every single time I was ever in Muller's he was there - and had been there for hours, on the same stool.
And I'll give ten points to the person who can identify the gravel-voiced originator of this famous Muller's rejoinder:
"GOT TA' BE DAT WAY!"

For me it was the Bunkhouse next to the firehouse. I would get pissed off at someone and would start walking home to Levitt. Invariably, Jeanine Claar's father would be on his way home from the firehouse and would make me get in the car and take me home..with a lecture, of course!

I used to hang out quite a bit at the Bunkhouse, too. I'll bet we know each other. If only we could, uh...remember. I had to stop going there, though, after I stayed real late one night and beat Billy Clougher for $300 on the pool table. He was a maniac, and was about an inch from bashing my head in with a pool cue when Steve McCallister jumped over the bar and saved my life.
The Cloughers were part owners at the time, and they were there every single night, drinking away their profits. I was pretty dumb back then, but not so dumb (or drunk!) that I'd ever mess with them.

I hung out there with Jeanine Claar, Laurie Marino, Dusty, Mark Burns, etc... I was the blonde chick who used to sit on the juke box and play my harmonica along to whatever Neil Young songs were playing.

Yea - I remember that, but I really can't place your face. It's weird how that works - I hardly knew Jeannine, but I still remember exactly what she looked like. And speaking of Neil Young....I have a large stack of CDs on my desk at work that I play on my PC, and Thursday afternoon I happened to be playing Harvest. I was away from my desk a lot that day, so the CD just kept repeating. At least 10 times that day I heard people in adjoining offices (including my boss) whistling the harp line from Heart of Gold. Great album.

Click on my name in the address and my picture will pop up. I don't know how I did that, but one day I was screwing around and it happened. Somedays I put on my tape of the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty"and blast that. The producer in the next office is usually not pleased. Can you believe that album is 30 years old???

Hi Carol...Thanks for the greetings. Nice to hear from another New Yorker. It took me a while to get your note as I changed the dash to a dot in my email address(details...). Being five years my junior we probably never met, but you may have known my brother. Do you live in 'greater Seattle' or the outskirts? Hope you enjoy it here - it is a bit far away...
