Matthew Perry

Chandler Muriel Bing on 'Friends'

Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, after his parents divorced, Matthew Perry became a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada as he was growing up. However, after moving to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to live with his father, actor John Bennett Perry, he became more interested in acting.

Upon graduating from high school, Perry intended to enroll at the University of Southern California. But when he was offered a leading role on the television series 'Boys Will Be Boys,' he seized the opportunity to begin his acting career. His other series credits include regular roles on 'Home Free' and 'Sydney,' as well as a recurring part on 'Growing Pains.' He also guest-starred on such series as 'Who's the Boss?,' 'The Tracey Ullman Show,' 'Empty Nest,' 'The John Larroquette Show' and 'Beverly Hills, 90210.'

His television movies include 'Deadly Relations,' 'Call Me Anna' and 'Dance 'til Dawn.' Among his feature films are 'Fools Rush In,' 'A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon,' 'She's Out of Control' and 'Parallel Lives.' Perry also co-starred with Chris Farley in the buddy comedy 'Almost Heroes' and he stared in the romantic comedy 'Three to Tango,' opposite Neve Campbell. Perry can next be seen starring opposite Elizabeth Hurley in the upcoming comedy 'Servicing Sarah.' He recently appeared in the hit comedy film 'The Whole Nine Yards,' as the neighbor of a hit man played by Bruce Willis.

In addition to acting, Perry enjoys writing; he sold his first pilot, 'Maxwell's House,' to Universal Television prior to being cast on 'Friends.' His other interests include playing ice hockey and softball.

Perry lives in Los Angeles. His birthday is August 19.

Did You Know:

That Mr. Perry got the part of Chandler Bing by reading for Marta Kauffman, the producer, on a Wednesday, then read for Warner Bros., the studio, on Thursday, then read for the Network on Friday, and he started work on Monday. Before this he had been helping other people to try and get the part by telling them what would be funny.

He actually dated Julia Roberts after she guest starred on one of the episodes from the second series. He said it couldn't work out because they were both too busy.

Also, isn't it weird that he chose acting over a professional tennis career in Canada? That is one huge decision, but he made the right choice! He actually appeared in FOX's "Beverly Hills 90210" In the show's 2nd season as a really good, professional tennis player, but ended up trying to commit suicide b/c it was not what he wanted.

Quote from "Chandler":
Mona: Hi!
Chandler: Oh, Joeys gonna be thrilled! He was hoping youd come by as a slutty nurse.
Mona: Umm, actually Im just a nurse.
Chandler: Youd think that would embarrass me, but you see Im maxed out.
