Lisa Kudrow

Phoebe Buffay on 'Friends'

Lisa Kudrow earned an Emmy Award in 1998 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Phoebe, the spacy but lovable folk singer and massage therapist. She was first nominated in 1995 for the same role. Kudrow has also been nominated for Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and American Comedy Awards for her performance on 'Friends.'

Kudrow graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, with a bachelor's degree in biology. Intending to pursue a career in research, she returned to Los Angeles and began working with her father, a world-renowned headache specialist. In all likelihood, Kudrow would be a researcher today if she had not been inspired to perform by one of her brother's friends, actor/comedian Jon Lovitz (NBC's 'Saturday Night Live').

Kudrow began studying with Cynthia Szigeti, a well-known improvisation teacher based in Los Angeles. In that class she met and became close friends with the then-unknown Conan O'Brien (NBC's 'Late Night with Conan O'Brian'). In 1989, her dream of becoming a performer became a reality when she was accepted as a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings.

A recurring role as Ursula, the ditzy waitress on NBC's comedy series 'Mad About You,' led to Kudrow's starring role on 'Friends.' Her other television credits include a recurring role on 'Bob' and guest-starring parts in 'Cheers,' 'Coach,' 'Newhart,' 'Flying Blind' and 'Hope & Gloria.'

Kudrow has also had success on the big screen. Earlier this year, she completed filming 'Marci X,' alongside Damon Wayans, set to be released in 2002. Kudrow also starred in the film 'Hanging Up' opposite Meg Ryan and Diane Keaton, and appeared opposite John Travolta in 'Lucky Numbers,' a comedy from Nora Ephron. She starred opposite Mira Sorvino in the hit comedy 'Romy & Michele's High School Reunion' and she co-starred in Albert Brooks' comedy 'Mother.' She earned a New York Film Critics Award for her starring role in 'The Opposite of Sex,' with Christina Ricci, Martin Donovan and Lyle Lovett, and starred in 'Clockwatchers' with Toni Collette and Parker Posey. Most recently, Kudrow co-starred in director Harold Ramis' 'Analyze This' with Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro. A native of California, Kudrow was born in Encino and raised in Tarzana. She, her husband Michel Stern, and their son live in Los Angeles. Her birthday is July 30.

Quotes from "Phoebe":
Rachel: I know, but I was just thinking about how huge this is for me. I didnt even go to how huge this was going to be for the father.
Phoebe: Youre thinking about this way too much. Just tell him and get it over with. Its like, its like ripping off this Band-Aid. (On her arm) Quick and painless, watch. (Rips it off.) OH MOTHER OF--!...See?

Phoebe: How can you let him talk to your crotch like that?
Rachel: (pause) Hes talking to the baby.
Phoebe: Ohh! Okay! Okay, cause when-when he said, "I cant wait to hear your first words," I thought, "Theres a trick."
