I just experienced my 6th year at MDA Summer Camp as the Arts & Crafts Director. I am an artist and an MDA client affected with Central Core Disease. I was never able to go to camp as a child due to lack of money but now, with generous donations from wonderful people, parents don't have to worry about sending their child to camp. MDA fundraisers raise enough money to send every child to camp. And now, after all of these years I too am able to go to camp and have as much fun as a volunteer as I would have had as a child. And being an artist I hope to help kids open up to their creativity and to not be afraid to express themselves through art.
With the usual activities of fishing, swimming, arts & crafts (my area!), canoes, petting zoo, water fights, food fight (only one this year), crushes, gossip, marshmallow eating contests, campfires, stargazing, frog catching, mosquito bitten, all you can eat buffets, movie making, dancing, laughing, and so on.........the kids had a wonderful time.....just as I have.
MDA Summer Camp is about the kids. It's about giving the children a week where they can just be themselves and be with so many others who know exactly what they are going through. It's a place where there is no staring...no pointing....no teasing....no name calling. At MDA Summer camp.....everyone is the same.....HAPPY!
Can't wait until next year! |
