I reflect in this dissertation on the autobiographies of Augustine,Rousseau and Sartre.Presented is an analysis of how philosophy and its practice changed the lives ofthese 3 philosophers. Chapter 2, 3, and 4 are respectively concerned with Augustine'sand Rousseau's Confessions, with Sartre's Words and other of these authors' main works. Its conclusion demonstrates that in contradistinction to psychoanalytical understandingsabout continuity and consistency the philosophers mentioned attained unity and harmonywithin themselves through their own way of practising philosophy.
In this dissertation, I develop a theory of philosophicalcounseling and teaching. It is the outcome of my holding the tensionof my practical and theoretical viewing points.Holding the tension isaterm which Maurice Friedman coined to counter the ideaof dichotomous either/or thinking and any attempt to synthesize thought into unity or fusion. This dissertation focuses on Buber's notion of the dialogical, which impliesacknowledging the other's otherness. Buber's notion ofother is diametrically opposedto the post-modern notion of other. Thedifference lies in the fact that Buber's notion ofthe not-I is rooted in trust, whereas the post-modern notion of denial and exclusion is rootedin distrust. This difference is of great importance, especially as itaffects fields likecounseling and teaching. In both counseling and teaching, it is important to be ableto acknowledge the other as other, and tobe able to meet the other while holding one'sown ground. Yet, one canonlydo so when one can trust the other's otherness throughan act of implicitly understanding his otherness. In any field which affects learning andteaching, we deal with different styles of discourse. It is my contention that a topic-centereddiscourse style distrusts what isimplicitly understood and requires that it be made explicit. It cannot be relied upon for any kind of accuracy or coherence.Topic-associating, trustsand relies on what is implicitly understood. In my work as both philosophical counselor and teacher I try to restore the notionof working on the basis of understood trust, andonthe basis of responding topeople's otherness. In this dissertation I present illustrations of my work as philosophicalcounselor and as an instructor in the Upward BoundCollege Prep Academy atthe University of Illinois. These are examplesofactively bringing trust back into theinteraction between teacher/studentor counselor/counselee.
This dissertation critiques both the existing theoretical conceptions of philosophicalcounseling and accounts of its practice. It alsocompares philosophical counseling withpsychotherapy in order to pointout the fallacy of the argument that philosophicalcounseling is radicallyremoved from all forms of psychotherapy. It then presents and defends a four-stage model ofphilosophical counselling thatcaptures the best conceptions and reports of practice, one that is more comprehensive, more positive (as opposed to the more common characterization of what it is not)more explicit, and more definitive in its conceptualization than any that have beenoffered in the philosophical counseling literature thus far.Furthermore, this model addresses more of the actual needs of potential clients asthey are highlighted in descriptive accounts and case studies, and conforms moreclosely to justifiable normative criteria of what ought to constitute practice inphilosophical counselling than any of the currently existing models. The final chapter highlights those areas in which philosophical counselling issuperior to approaches found in psychotherapy, and explores the benefitsof philosophical counselling over other forms of counseling.
("Faith and Character. Life counselling in `Philosophical Practice´") has been published in August 2000. Its supervisor was Prof. Herbert Schnadelbach of the Humboldt University, Berlin. It has been graded with "cum laude" and is the first Ph.D. thesis on the subject in German. In spite of its scientific nature, the work is written in an understandable language and primarily adresses philosophical counsellors.
The work explores the institutional development as well as the conceptual foundations of philosophi-cal counselling. I explore the philosophy of dialogue and the philosophical goals of counselling. Tho-rough comparisons are drawn to different kinds of psychotherapy. Furthermore, a number of case stu-dies of different counsellors allows for a first systematic insight into the actual couselling practice.
My work is published by Verlag Dr. Kovac, ISBN 3-8300-0202-5. However, the price is DM 151,60, which is far too high for a book of 260 pages. I offer you to purchase one of my author`s copies for DM 60,-. I can also offer you to send you the table of contents if you send me an e-mail under [email protected].
