Those who have been forgiven by the power of the Holy Spirit feel the forgiveness of God, and are by that same Spirit transformed into people who forgive others. All grudges disappear when the Spirit holds sway within our hearts. The forgiven become Forgivers.
Chuck Colson, one-time White House counsel and founder of Prison Fellowship, tells the incredible story of taking a group of people into the Indiana State Penitentiary to conduct a worship service with inmates on death row. Following the service, as the visitors were checking out, it was discovered that one of the visitors was missing. Colson hurried back to the cellblock to find that one of the men, part of the ministry team, was sitting in a cell with one of the prisoners with his arm around the prisoner's shoulder. A bit ticked off by this, Colson shouted at the man, "Don't you realize you're violating our privileges here? When we're asked to leave, we should leave! You can cause trouble for us by lingering behind like this."
The man looked up and said, "This brother is James Brewer. He's condemned to die. I'm Judge Clement. I'm the man who pronounced the sentence on him. Please forgive me for lingering behind, but we both needed some time to forgive each other."
