The Day of Rain

A collection by Joseph Dunlap

Rain

The tears of the skies
Cover the rain in my eyes.

Sonnet (version 1: iambic, free meter)

Unintentional was your part,
So you cannot take it back;
I never gave away my heart,
Yet there's now a part I lack.

I never gave away my love,
I didn't want to miss;
But miss I do, the shadows of
My feelings, and of this:

The trust I felt, the one I lack
To feel the closeness of.
But even though I can't take back,
I didn't lose my love --

Lose perhaps, for I did not give;
But lose perhaps, despite, in whom the giver is.

Sonnet (version 2: iambic pentameter)

Unknowing, unintending was your part,
So in such you cannot take it back;
I know I never gave away my heart,
And yet I know there is a part I lack.
I know I never gave away my love,
Because I was afraid that I would miss;
But miss I do, I miss the shadows of
My feelings past, and also want of this:
The trust I felt, and now the one I lack,
That which is gone, to feel the closeness of.
But even though I find I can't take back,
I know I never gave or lost my love --
. Never lost perhaps; I did not give;
. But lost perhaps, in whom the giver is.

Yes

Don't say yes
If you don't mean it

In

The mercy giv'n you
Do not lead him on

O

Don't say yes
Unless you can't say

No

Care

Why does it hurt?
I know I shouldn't care
As much as I do
But do I dare?
Do I dare not to care
When I am told to go on?
Go on I will,
But I will never not to care.
