About Tango

      In around 1880 in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina,an Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, immigrants from Europe and Africa gravitated toward the bars and brothels in search of a few drinks and some companionship, and from their hardship came the tango. The music and dance borrowed heavily from the many nations of the immigrants. From Africa came the relentless rhythms of the slave drums. From the pampas of Argentina came the influence of milonga -- music that combined Indian rhythms with early Spanish music. The tango speaks of a fatalistic existence, one in which pain and sorrow are the expected destiny. It was Carlos Gardel that brought the tango to the attention of the world.
