It looks as though the president of Pakistan's days in power are numbered - but this military dictator remains the best bet for peace in the region.
President Musharraf's days in uniform and in power appear to be numbered. The bloody showdown at the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque), the suicide bombings in the capital Islamabad, the popular support for the chief justice, and the rising discontent with the general's writ all point to the end of this phase of military rule.
There's no doubt the size of the crisis, or else the president would not have held talks with a sworn enemy: the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Civil rights lawyers and Islamists are now too consenting bedfellows. Power is being negotiated between the courts, parliament, barracks and mosque.
What is being worked out now in Pakistan, sometimes smoothly but mostly chaotically, is an internal consensus on governance. There's no doubt that a military government in Pakistan can find political partners from its opponents to legitimise itself again. Delhi remains silent on this process, knowing its intervention will only make matters worse.
The paradox for the world's biggest democracy is that this military dictator remains the best bet for peace in the region. While the rugged ranges of the Afghan border remain in the west's sights, Pakistan's "core issue" is the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir.
India and Musharraf's Pakistan are close enough to do a deal. The outline of a solution is well known, revolving around demilitarisation, self-governance and joint management along both sides of the de facto border.
The problem is one of trust. Pakistan has not shut down its anti-Indian militant organisations and the Indian army remains entrenched. The Indian government concedes that jihadi infiltration from Pakistani Kashmir has dropped and the Indian state has been noticeably quieter in the past few months. But there's no rush in New Delhi for conflict resolution.
Bizarrely, it has been the military leader who has been in a hurry to make peace, while the hawks have circled in democratic Delhi. India snubbed Musharraf's public suggestion to cut troop numbers in Kashmir Valley, even though it has been a demand of a local ally of the Congress party. Delhi is being difficult over a coordinated withdrawal from the world's highest battlefield, the Siachen glacier. Troops eyeball each other over a vast snowfield.
India is aware Musharraf can deliver some kind of peace. Soldiers in Pakistan distrust politicians' abilities to safeguard the national interest. So Musharraf, as army chief, sabotaged the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif's peace overtures to India in the late 90s. The Pakistani army thinks only it can make a deal with India that nobody could renege on.
The counter argument is that any settlement would lack popular legitimacy, but the unpleasant reality is that politicians in Pakistan are often servants rather than masters. Ms Bhutto is unlikely to be able to control Pakistan's spies, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, which is now attempting to disarm and destroy militants it once created and used. She may also face a new army chief, unwilling for long to listen to the democrats.
This is not to say Ms Bhutto would not try to do the right thing. But her alleged closeness with India and the "betrayal" of Sikh militants operating from Pakistan helped her to get dismissed as prime minister in 1990. Navigating these murky waters is a lesson Ms Bhutto has never forgotten. When she returned to office in 1993, as a matter of survival, it was with a harder anti-India line.
All this is compounded by the rise of the Islamic parties, who are now at the forefront of the campaign to unseat Musharraf. These politician-priests are essentially democrats, albeit reluctant compromisers.
The jihadists are not. They were allowed to flourish during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan but now target US and European troops. These groups of mystical fanatics pose a serious threat to Pakistan's internal security. Musharraf held the view that it took a diamond to cut a diamond: you needed commandos to deal with "terrorists". Although it was Washington that demanded search-and-destroy operations, India benefited. Musharraf, for his troubles, became a marked man. Toppled from power, the odds are short on his survival.
The United States is also keen on peace between India and Pakistan. It rightly worries that a near-war between the two neighbours could suddenly turn nuclear. But Washington's real concern is that the Pakistani army's strength to deal with al-Qaida would be sapped if soldiers were diverted from the Afghan border to the Indian one.
A new leader could still do a deal with India. There's no reason democracy cannot take root in Pakistan. It might take time, especially if there is no orderly transition. And messy indigenous politics may produce a less westernised, social liberal than Musharraf to deal with. Gone, for a while at least, would be the talk of an India-Pakistan treaty of peace, friendship and cooperation, or that gas from Iran could flow through Pakistan to India. Worse still, blood may once again run over the mountains of Kashmir.

THIS is why old soviet central Asia, Iraq & Eastern Europe are ringed with an arc of USA bases. To keep the oil/ gas sold in $ & help subvert any govt (eg Putin's who sells his oil in Roubles) not complying.

The critical division within the USA ruling class IS over immigration. They don�t know which way to jump. ...will strengthen Scottish nationalism. Meaning that any attempt to wage war against Iran, would lead to Scottish independence, meaning the UK would no longer exist as a viable bridge to leverage USA power in Europe & by default USA power throughout the world. Hence, AFTER Kosovo independence, war against Iran would self evidently be to pull the lever on the trapdoor the regime itself be standing on.

To understand the London & Glasgow bomb incidents as Strategy of Tension Ops, we must view them in their geo strategic context.
With the Kosovo issue coming to a head, the independence of Kosovo would lead to critical growth in the development of Scottish nationalism.
This in turn would make it clear to the USA imperium that any attack on Iran or even Pakistan (to prop up the Petrodollar at the point of a nuclear sixshooter) would have the effect of triggering Scottish independence. Meaning the UK would no longer be able to function as a bridge to Europe, meaning that USA could no longer leverage its power by default through Europe. Would lose control of the entire geo strategic & political economic agenda.
THIS would mean it would become SELF EVIDENT that any attempt to prop up the Petrodollar at the point of a nuclear sixshooter via the Iran war etc, would be to pull the lever on the very trapdoor they themselves are standing on.
So the terror incidents in London & then afterwards Glasgow, in having the effect of binding Scotland & England more closely together in psycho political terms, have a dampening effect on Scottish nationalism in the context of Kosovo UDI.
The danger for the imperium is that if they go the whole hog & execute a mass casualty incident, then long before this would generate any sympathy for an attack on Iran, this would catalyse an all out race war gathering its own momentum, collapsing the UK political economy/ state completely.

So Pakistan (no sceptered isle, but a land cursed by political geography, with much more powerful neighbour to its east & the ultimate geo historic vortex to its northwest meaning it was predestined that the army would play a top heavy role in the nation's political economy) was further burdened by 5 million heavily armed Afghan refugees & their narco political economy after the USSR had been bled white & collapsed vis the (aforementioned) Petrodollar propelled arms race.
As if this was not bad enough, pre Sept 11th, the USA petrodollar regime was/ is desperate to prop up its uttrely worthless fiat currency's global reserve status (insuring it remains negotiable) by insuring that the oil/ gas of Central Asia is sold in $ (as well as that of the mideast). Hence the arc of USA bases there (as well as those planned for Iraq). Hence Leila Helms (neice of ex CIA chief Richard Helms) was Taliban PR rep in USA 3 weeks before Sept 11th. The Taliban were offered a carpet of gold, if they agreed to defend the pipeline from Central Asia, or a carpet of bombs if they did not.
After Bin Laden got NORAD to stand down from his cave enabling him to demolish 3 steelframed buildings with 2 planes on Sept 11th (the 3rd WTC Building 7 was not even hit by a plane), Richard Armitage threatened Musharraf with Pakistan's nuclear incineration if he did not comply with USA policy in the region (The Taliban having ben offered gold or bombs), Karzai being a former employee of UNACOL.
Since then, Musharraf has found himself in an impossible position; trying to balance between the fallout of the USA imperium's pro Jihadi policy (Petrodollar alliance with Saudi Arabia); & the USA imperium's demands for co-operation with their `war on terror' - especially to help consolidate control of Afghanistan.
Musharraf has 80,000 troops on the Afghan border & is trying to hold the Durrand line in the most difficult inhabited terrain on the planet. The USA imperium has a few hundred & is anxious to BOTH pass the blame onto somebody else...

Imran `Goldsmith' Khan longs only to hear `Pakistan, Imran Khan!' one last time before his country is erased from the map. He could only appease the mullahs by giving them everything they want.
Do I even have to mention what the much vaunted Choudary affair is really about? If Musharraf was more `liberal' towards the Mullahs, which is the issue in the Choudary affair, Pakistan would be even more threatened more immediately by the USA imperium.As he is not, hypocrites, opportunists, enemies of Pakistan, dinner party fascists who discreetly think it no great loss to see Pakistan erased from the map (as a result of mullahs coming to power); decry his lack of constitutionality.& the USA drunk on debt & war, the blood & oil of others, does not notice or care what it has done to my fatherland, Pakistan; or any other lesser breeds without the law they have no need of pretending any longer to possess themlseves.
So Musharraf is by far the best man, the only man for a fundamentally impossible situation, to keep the country just about together for long enough for the USA petrodollar imperium to collapse of its own accord.
...is so deeply buried/ rendered obscure, such counterweights cannot be deployed to check USA apocalyptic threats against Pakistan. Eg current (as at 20 July 2007) USA threats to invade Pakistan if General Musharraf does not clampdown harder � which would lead to General Musharraf�s overthrow & the pretext for the USA to incinerate Pakistan & attempt to prop up its imperium through overt nuclear terror.
