The Devil and Lilly E. Gray
Musings and the latest news on my ongoing investigation to uncover the story of Utah's most mysterious grave...
The Beast in Zion--Could it Be?
photo

From this time on I lived in a perfect shower of diplomas, from Bucharest to Salt Lake City.

That is a quote from Aleister Crowley himself, apparently bragging about all his masonic regalia.  The entire article can be viewed here, http://www.the7thfire.com/new_world_order/Freemasonry/aliester_crowley_33_deg..

So--there is supposedly a quote from his own mouth that he was in Salt Lake City.  I have dismissed a connection between Crowley and Lily's inscription, assuming that it was too far-fetched.  But, he was referred to literally & exactly as "The Beast 666".  In that sense, if the inscription does in fact refer to Crowley, it reads well.  Conversely, if it refers to Highway 666, for example, or the actual devil, satan, or a person, one that was cause of abuse in her life, perhaps her husband, as I and others have speculated, there is much that is hidden, and it reads awkwardly.  The idea that there is a figure such as Crowley, referred to exactly as "The Beast 666", and that he was in Salt Lake City, that Lily was the right age to have been a part of his following, all seems to be enough of a lead to pursue.  Please feel free to email me or leave comments with any information you know of concerning Aleister Crowley's time in the U.S., particularly the West & Utah, and anything concerning disciples or students.

The link isn't working for me. :(

Love the work you're doing here. Back on 6-6-06, I posted a photo of Lilly's grave on Flickr. It is far and away my most viewed image.

good luck with that endeavor. The doctors are most likley long dead, and the hospital has changed hands. It is a long shot anyway, that her doctors could shed any light on her tombstone inscription.

I think you want a more symbolic embodiment of what is described on the headstone. I personally think that it would be to simple for it all to be answered with Crowley being literally referred to as "The Beast 666", and unless you can find a direct connection between Lily and Crowley I doubt that's it. I also think that there is more hidden in the change of name and date of birth on the headstone. Maybe something in the numbers themselves.

I disagree. Mistakes on gravestones are quite common. The numbers and letters do not 'work' numerologically speaking. It has been rehased and worked over and over. I think the link between lilly and crowley is in fact, far, far from simple.

I did some quick research with good old google and this is what I came up with. I don't want to go into great detail but take what I found and draw your own conclusions. "The beast in man: degenerationism and mental retardation, 1900-1920."

Have you tried checking out a phone book or city listing from 1958 to see who would have been making tombstones from that era and then checking with them (the local newspaper might still keep their phone books and city directories from the time)? I'm sure if they're still around they might know something. Also, you could check with whoever administers the cemetery to see if they could give you some info into the manufacturers. You could also check with the newspaper about searching their archives with you for any information about the grave.

Stones are simply ordered and engraved. Perhaps if this happened just a couple years ago, there would be a remote possibility that a worker happened to stike up a conversation with whomever ordered the stone, and might be willing to provide information. People involved in the funeral & death industry are by nature discreet and unintrusive. I highly doubt that even given this bizarre thing to engrave, they would inquire about the reason. However, since the chances that the people working at the monument co. are long dead, any information they may have had about the stone have probably survived as family stories if at all. thanks for your comments and ideas.

Even if it's a reference to Crowley, it doesn't solve everything. Why is she a 'victim', and who wrote the strange inscription?

I think the nature of religion and Salt Lake City could shed some light on this. Jesus freaks? Did she lead an impure life? Some minister wrote it?

Who knows?

First thing I'd do is order a copy of the death certificate from the state.

It should provide maiden name & possibly more family info (parents' names, date & place of birth). In my state, unless you state you're a close relative or more than 80 years have passed, they do not reveal cause of death. However, it would likely list the attending physician.
That was a pretty odd comment on a prior entry about her dying in 1881, though. ?
Best of luck, very interesting info you've gathered! Thanks!
